Mullin Promises Voter Fraud Crackdown After Trump’s National Address

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is threatening to punish states if they don’t scrub voter lists of people not eligible to vote and implement administration-directed security enhancements for voting machines.“We’re saying that the machines have to be secured and that your voter registration list needs to be scrubbed,” Mr. Mullin said Friday at a White House press conference.The announcement came a day after President Trump stressed voting security concerns in a primetime address that highlighted allegations of foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election.Mr. Mullin says his department has identified 250,000 non-citizens who are registered to vote in just four states — California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nevada. He also said the department had uncovered the names of 400,000 individuals who are still registered to vote even though they are deceased. “We have individuals that are voting that shouldn’t be,” Mr. Mullin said. But when asked, he could not say whether any of the non-citizens or deceased individuals had actually voted. He said teams were still going through the lists to identify anyone who voted illegally.Mr. Trump, on Thursday, announced he had declassified hundreds of documents that he says show foreign governments tried to hack voter data and possibly interfere in the 2020 election. Mr. Mullin doubled down on those claims.“We know for sure that our foreign adversaries, not our allies, foreign adversaries have parts that are vital pieces in our voting machines,” Mr. Mullin said. “We know that they can access what they consider the key to the back of these machines. We know that they can change voter registration and your vote. We know it’s possible,” he added without citing any actual cases of it taking place.The Chinese government has denied any attempt to hack American voting systems or sway elections and dismissed Mr. Trump’s claims that it meddled in the 2020 election as “entirely fabricated.”A declassified National Intelligence Council report released by the Biden administration in March 2021 concluded that no foreign country had altered or compromised any technical aspects of the 2020 voting process, but cited attempted influence campaigns, particularly by Russia and Iran.Mr. Mullin also threatened fines, penalties, or prison time for any state election officials who refuse to hand over requested voter data. He said states that don’t use a new Homeland Security tool to identify noncitizen voters will not be reimbursed for federal election costs. A federal judge, however, has blocked states from using the system over privacy concerns.Another potential roadblock for the plan is that the Constitution gives states, and not the federal government, control over how elections are run.Mr. Mullin criticized NBC and ABC for not carrying Mr. Trump’s Thursday night address, calling the decision shameful. “This isn’t about rehashing the 2020 election, this is just exposing what took place and to make sure it never happens again,” Mr. Mullin said.
