NASA’s Artemis II Astronauts Prepare To Leave Earth’s Atmosphere Bound for Moon

Toilet issues will not affect the first manned mission to the moon in more than 50 years.Astronaut Christina Koch was able to fix a toilet that malfunctioned after the Artemis II crew reached orbit around Earth on Wednesday. The successful use of the new toilet system is an important goal of the 10-day mission to be capped with a lunar flyby.After a four-hour sleep break, the crew was awoken Thursday by the John Legend song ‘Green Light’ so they could prepare for the day’s events, including an exercise session. The big item on the agenda is an engine burn that will send the Orion spacecraft and its four astronauts to the moon. The translunar injection burn is scheduled for 7:49 p.m. Thursday and will last for just under six minutes, producing a change in velocity of 1,272 feet per second, sending the crew out of low Earth orbit.Flight controllers will closely monitor engine performance, guidance, and navigation data throughout the maneuver to ensure Orion remains precisely aligned for the outbound journey.Ms. Koch was also tasked to set up Orion’s system to perform the burn, done by the main engine on the spacecraft’s European Service Module. If all goes well, the three Americans and one Canadian astronaut will spend four days headed to the moon. They will come closest to the moon on flight day six with the crew expected to set a record for the farthest anyone has traveled from Earth.The Artemis crew dressed up as characters from the AppleTV show “Severance” for halloween 2025. @lumonsindustry/X.com. The crew will come within about 4,000 miles of the lunar surface as they swing around the far side of the moon to be propelled back to Earth. NASA says the moon should look to them about the size of a basketball held at arm’s length.The plan is for the Orion capsule to splash down in the Pacific Ocean on the 10th day of the flight.The mission marks a key step forward in the plan for a long-term return to the moon and future missions to Mars. NASA hopes to eventually build a base on the moon for astronauts to conduct long-term missions. That base could be used as a training ground for new technologies needed for Mars missions.NASA has pushed back the date for a lunar landing until early 2028 after scrapping a planned Artemis III mission later this year. The Artemis III phase calls for astronauts to dock in lower-Earth orbit with new moon landers being built by SpaceX and Blue Origin. NASA hopes that mission will take place sometime next year.America is in a new space race with China, with each trying to be first to put humans on the moon since the Apollo 17 landing 53 years ago.NASA is accelerating plans to build a mini-nuclear reactor to deploy to the lunar surface. The space agency has been studying using fission systems to provide power on the moon and eventually Mars. While still being developed, such systems are expected to be relatively small and lightweight while powerful enough to enable “robust operations,” NASA says.
