A Staten Island firefighter is accused of faking physical therapy appointments to collect pay from the Fire Department.
John Dimino, 45, an 18-year veteran of the Fire Department, was arrested yesterday and prosecutors allege he defrauded the public out of thousands of dollars. According to the city’s Department of Investigation, Mr. Dimino falsely indicated in log books that he was leaving work at various times between August 2007 and February 2008 to go to physical therapy appointments, collecting money for the time spent at these sessions while in actuality he didn’t attend them. Mr. Dimino allegedly collected about $7,500 in taxpayer money using these bogus physical therapy sessions as cover. Mr. Dimino’s annual salary is about $68,470, according to the DOI.
Mr. Dimino is being charged with third-degree grand larceny and falsifying business records. He is the second city employee arrested this month on charges of faking city records to obtain unearned pay and the fifth since June.
