A space heater caused a fire at Mt. Sinai Medical Center at 5th Avenue and 101st Street yesterday morning, leaving seven people with minor injuries, fire officials said.
Though firefighters brought the flames under control in an hour and a half, 13 patients in a neurosurgical unit were moved to a different part of the hospital.
The fire was first reported in a doctor’s office on the seventh floor at 7:54 a.m. and was under control by 9:32 a.m., fire officials said. The office was the only room affected directly by the flames, but smoke spilled into the corridors and other offices. One patient, four hospital workers, and two firefighters were treated for minor smoke inhalation.
