Senator Bill Cassidy, who placed third in a Republican primary for another term in the Senate on Saturday, is promising to be an independent voice for Louisiana during his final seven months in the chamber. As the chairman of the committee that oversees public health issues, Dr. Cassidy will have a great deal of influence over the fate of President Trump’s nominees for key roles.
