DeChambeau’s Oval Office Appearance With Trump Masks Tough Questions About LIV’s Future

While LIV Golf headliners spent last week fielding uncomfortable questions about the league’s future at Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C., one of its biggest stars was across town basking in a very different spotlight beside President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.Dressed in golf attire and surrounded by politicians, athletes and youngsters, Bryson DeChambeau opted to be part of the political theater, standing behind Mr. Trump as he signed an initiative restoring the Presidential Fitness Test Award.For LIV Golf, the split-screen optics could not have been more striking On one side was Mr. DeChambeau, electing to pursue his own interests, smiling for the cameras alongside Mr. Trump, Hall of Fame golfer Gary Player, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and a group of children.A few miles away, LIV chief executive Scott O’Neil, did more spinning than a top while attempting to reassure players, sponsors and media that the Saudi-backed golf league remains stable despite growing uncertainty after reports that the Public Investment Fund plans to end direct funding after this season.Mr. DeChambeau, one of the most popular players in professional golf, is in the final year of his LIV contract and his future status with the league is uncertain. Yet instead of attending the only formal press conference before the start of the tournament on Thursday, he was in the Oval Office supporting Mr. Trump and delivering words of inspiration to the school children.“The most important thing you can do is get one percent better every day,” Mr. DeChambeau told the children gathered in the Oval Office. “Try to be a better version of yourself every day, because one day you can be up here as well. Thank you, Mr. President.”Mr. Trump signed the order Tuesday as part of a broader push to restore the Presidential Fitness Test, which was phased out during the administration of former President Barack Obama.“My administration is working very hard to defend America’s cherished athletic traditions and pass our values of excellence and competitiveness to the next generation,” Mr. Trump said during the ceremony.The initiative revives a once-familiar school benchmark involving exercises such as pullups, sit-ups, shuttle runs and timed distance runs. Yet LIV Golf faces its own test of endurance.Mr. Trump himself visited the National Golf Course Washington D.C. in Sterling, Virginia, last week to see LIV golfers in action. He was joined by his son Eric Trump and the pair met with representatives from the Public Investment Fund. The president has expressed his preference for LIV golfers to return the PGA tour. “I do believe that all of the golfers should be playing against each other,” he said. “They were viewing something as a monopoly, but it’s swaying away…They have great players on LIV, but its almost like people want to see that. That’s why the Masters was so good, because you saw everybody together. The tour wants to have the best players.”The LIV Golf Virginia tournament was won by Australian Lucas Herbert, who won his first ever LIV title, finishing four shots ahead of Sergio Garcia, with Mr. DeChambeau finishing third.At Trump National D.C., Mr. O’Neil was asked repeatedly about the league’s financial future after reports surfaced of an emergency meeting in New York and subsequent confirmation that PIF funding will conclude after the 2026 season.Two weeks ago, Mr. O’Neil had dismissed speculation of instability as “a lot of reaching and grabbing for headlines and clickbait.” Days later, the funding revelation made those questions unavoidable during LIV’s first event of the year in the United States.While Mr. O’Neil projected confidence in LIV’s future, he admitted negotiations with Mr. DeChambeau are continuing. “Bryson’s special,” Mr. O’Neil said. “We’re literally talking with him about the future of LIV Golf — not just golf, but the business. He’s smart, driven, committed and a heck of a partner.”Retaining Mr. DeChambeau is vital as LIV seeks to attract funding from outside sources beyond 2026. No player in LIV Golf currently carries greater crossover appeal. His YouTube success, major championship pedigree and close relationship with Mr. Trump have made him one of the league’s most visible public faces.LIV has announced it has retained Ducera Partners “as its investment banking advisor to guide the league in its efforts to secure long-term investment partners.” Meanwhile, players were left grappling publicly with the uncertainty surrounding the circuit. Jon Rahm, LIV’s other major champion and global star, admitted players were caught off guard by the funding news. “Like everybody, surprised,” Mr. Rahm told reporters. “Obviously unexpected.”Mr. Rahm, who reportedly signed a $300 million LIV contract that extends through 2028, emphasized that the league’s future is now largely in the hands of management.“Scott and his team have a lot of hard work to do,” he said. “But they’re experienced, and that’s why they’ve been chosen.”Mr. Rahm also revealed he resolved his standoff with the DP World Tour, reaching an agreement that restores his eligibility to compete there immediately and keep him in Ryder Cup consideration. Earning prize money on the DP World Tour might come in handy after acknowledging LIV players may eventually need to accept financial compromises as a new business model evolves. “For the business plan to change, there will probably need to be some concessions on our part,” Mr. Rahm said.Mr. O’Neil did little to deny that. “We’re going to have to change some things we do,” he said. “For next year, we’re going to be making some pretty significant, substantive changes.”He insisted LIV remains positioned for long-term viability, pointing to attendance figures in Australia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Indianapolis, as well as broadcasting agreements in more than 200 countries.“We need to get the players settled, focused on golf,” Mr. O’Neil said. “Then create a business that works like every other business in the world.”For now, that remains easier said than done.
