From its widely watched launch to its picture-perfect splashdown Friday evening, the Artemis II moon expedition has not only successfully completed its mission but also turbocharged public enthusiasm and support for President Trump’s ambitious goals of further space exploration. And in an era of deep political divisions over everything from immigration to the war in Iran, polling shows the latest enterprise, with its stunning images of planet Earth as seen from behind the moon, has been embraced by Democrats and Republicans in roughly equal measures.Millions of Americans are believed to have been glued to their television sets and electronic devices for the 8:17 pm EDT splashdown, bringing commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canada’s Jeremy Hansen back to earth after a 10-day journey that took them farther from Earth than any humans had traveled before.Most watched transfixed as military helicopters lifted the astronauts one by one from an inflatable raft docked to the capsule and transported them to the Navy’s recovery vessel, the USS John P. NASA’s daily briefings and official livestreams drew millions of viewers while hashtags like #ArtemisII, #NASA, and #BackToTheMoon have trended in the top five worldwide since the splashdown.A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted from April 3 to 5, while Artemis II was en route to the moon, found that 80 percent of respondents held very or somewhat favorable views of NASA, with 70 percent saying they get excited about space travel. Those upbeat views were held by large majorities of both Republicans and Democrats, Reuters reported.Possibly more significant for NASA’s budget, 62 percent said they believe the benefits of space travel outweigh the costs, compared to only 34 percent who disagreed. That stands in contrast to polling a year after the first moon landing in 1969, when just 39 percent felt the costs were justified according to a 1970 Harris poll.Support for space travel gradually improved in the decades since 1970, according to tracking by the Gallup Organization, which found respondents saying the costs were justified had ticked upward to reach 64 percent by 2019, the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
