Republicans Accuse GOP of Surrendering in New York and Point Finger at Billionaire’s Daughter

The New York Republican Party has been accused of surrendering in the midterms by fellow Republicans as tensions boil over. The New York Young Republican Club posted on X that “the NYGOP has given up,” in reply to Elon Musk who pointed out that there were zero Republicans to vote for in many races in the state.“Candidates feel abandoned from the top to the bottom of the ticket,” NYYRC president Stefano L. Forte tells the Sun. “We are doing everything we can to keep young voters and volunteers engaged with President Trump’s MAGA movement. It’s long past time for new blood in NYGOP’s leadership.”Former Republican candidate for Manhattan District Attorney Maud Maron backed the young Republicans and laid some of the blame for failure with Manhattan Republican Party chair, Andrea Catsimatidis, the daughter of billionaire entrepreneur John Catsimatidis. “Her daddy bought her the chairmanship of the Manhattan GOP, the way you, you know, you buy a Birkin bag,” Ms. Maron tells the Sun. “AJ Catsimatidis seems wholly disinterested in putting in the work needed to recruit, train, and support great Republican candidates. The truth is, the Republican Party isn’t interested in winning.” Ms. Maron attributed the “moribund” state of the party to “a combination of disinterest, lack of knowledge, lack of vision, lack of effort, and lack of money.” But Ms. Catsimatidis denied the accusations. “I can tell you we try to recruit judicial candidates every year and face the same problem — no one is willing to jeopardize their legal career to run as a Republican in Manhattan,” Ms. Catsimatidis, said in reply to Mr. Musk. “We field candidates in every other race and run competitive campaigns, raising enough money to qualify for city matching funds even in districts where Democrats outnumber Republicans 8 to 1. I also put a considerable amount of my own money into this fight.”Registered Democrats currently outnumber Republicans 6 to 1 in the five boroughs, according to the New York City Board of Elections Voter Enrollment Totals for 2026.“We are showing up, recruiting candidates, raising money and doing the work. We would welcome your help recruiting judicial candidates and supporting the Republicans willing to step up. We’re fighting an uphill battle, and we could use reinforcements!” Ms. Catsimatidis continued.Current congressional candidate Caroline Shinkle, who is running to replace Congressman Jerry Nadler’s seat, also plugged her own credentials and efforts.“I’m trying,” she posted on X. “I’m an MIT grad and Harvard Law alum running for U.S. Congress in the eye of the storm, the heart of Manhattan, against a Mamdani supporter. Elon, the people are with us, but we could use your support.” Ms. Maron echoed Ms. Catsimatidis and Ms. Shinkle’s calls to re-up resources for New York’s dark horse Republicans. “We have a lot of donors who could make a difference by helping to build and support a Republican Party who, like me, and like so many other people, used to be Democrats and very easily and readily called themselves liberal and progressive,” Ms. Maron said. Ms. Maron stood as a Democrat in municipal elections prior to her DA candidacy, before the party, as she put it, “galloped off to the left.” ”The donors of this city have to stop investing in a failed strategy, which is the idea that we can win back the center through the Democratic primary, because that’s just not true anymore,” she continued. “ You can spend a lot of time diagnosing what’s wrong with the Republican Party, but it sort of almost doesn’t matter. You just need to start from scratch.”
