Researchers Find Real TDS: Trump Dream Syndrome

President Donald Trump is owning the liberals even in their dreams.Researchers expecting to prove that dreams perform “overnight emotional regulation” were surprised by results showing Democrats and independents who dreamt about the 2024 election felt significantly worse about the results the next morning. The Democrats and independents also reported a more negative outlook toward their personal future. But the Republicans remained steady, the study by researchers at South Carolina’s Furman University found, awaking with no change in mood from when they went to bed.Researchers even asked the respondents to describe what they had dreamt. For one person, their dreamscape was a darkened, empty street dotted with polling stations. All of the polling booths were empty. When the person tried to vote, none of the machines worked and no one was around to help.“I started to become fearful, like something had happened,” the respondent said.Another person dreamed of being crushed in a queue of people in line, all of whom were murmuring about something but not speaking directly to the person.“I remember feeling confused and a little nervous about what line I had to get into,” the respondent said. One dreamt of an alternate result where Vice President Kamala Harris won, reporting in the dream watching television coverage of Ms. Harris waving as she strode across a stage festooned with American flags. The survey tackled the dreams of 931 people who were surveyed the morning of and the morning after the 2024 election. The study found that nearly 71% of all respondents reported a dream of some kind after going to bed on Election Night, with nearly half of all the dreamers surveyed saying that dream was related to the presidential election.“Among Democrats and Independents, dreaming about the election was associated with feeling more negatively about the election the next day,” the researchers wrote. But among Republicans, their mood toward President Trump’s electoral victory was much the same upon going to bed as it was after waking up.“In contrast, for Republicans, dreaming about the election was not significantly associated with overnight change in either negative…or positive affect,” the researchers wrote.During the second survey on the morning of November 6, 2024 all the respondents knew Mr. Trump had been re-elected.Dreams can be confusing and contain varied imagery drawn from our past, our imaginations or the day’s events.“There is strong evidence that dreams are often constructed from multiple past memories, with dreams being triggered by a specific recent experience, but not resembling any particular past event very strongly,” the researchers wrote. But in contrast to that evidence, the study found many of the election dreams were surprisingly literal.“Election-related dreams were also remarkable in the extent to which they very directly and transparently represented the event – 23% of all dreams specifically mentioned the candidates and/or other imagery associated with this particular election,” the researchers wrote.Intriguingly, 42% of the dreamers in the survey said that their dreams were also related to “another specific past experience of theirs,” leaving open the potential the election was dropped into dream tropes like being late for a class taught by Mr. Trump or naked at a rally for Ms. Harris. The study was published in PLOS One, a peer-reviewed journal, in September and was conducted by the Furman University Departments of Psychology and Neuroscience.
