Review: The Lofree Flow 2 Is the Low-Profile Keyboard To Buy

The original Lofree Flow was already one of the best low-profile mechanical keyboards available. It’s slim, elegant, with a lovely subtle thock, and just generally a really pleasant typing experience. The Flow 2 does not reinvent that, but refines what was already working to make the best low-profile keyboard on the market.For the unfamiliar, low-profile mechanical keyboards are an unusual niche. They sit closer to the desk than traditional mechanical boards — thinner, lighter, and easier to transport — but they also have less travel, less resistance, and a less satisfying sound. As such, it can seem hard to see why you would buy one over a laptop-style Bluetooth keyboard, such as the Magic Keyboard.In most cases, you shouldn’t — Logitech’s low-profile mechanical board, for example, feels so much worse than their keyboard-style board. But the Flow 2 is a meaningful upgrade in the typing experience, without going to the full thock, pressure, and cost of a proper mechanical board. The keys produce a satisfying, muted thock without being loud; the stabilizers do not rattle. The board sits at a comfortable angle, with adjustability, and it even has a swipe along the right edge to control the volume. I have the smallest configuration, in the 68-key form, but you can also get 84-key or 100-key versions if your work is extensively in spreadsheets. Also, for what’s worth, the battery lasts an age, even with the backlight on, and you can easily switch between multiple devices, or use it wired.It also just looks good. It has a clean, professional, modern look, with a solid aluminum construction, and though it’s not cheap — at $139 to $169, depending on size — it’s by far the best low-profile board you don’t have to build yourself.The Flow 2 won’t convert anyone committed to full-height mechanical keyboards. But it’s not trying to — and as the owner of a very nice custom mechanical keyboard, the Flow 2 is the only board that I switch it out for.
