Shock Poll Has Democratic Candidate in Deep-Red District Leading GOP Congresswoman By Double Digits

A Democratic candidate in a deep-red south Texas district is now leading his Republican opponent, Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz, by double digits, according to a new poll, even though both Ms. De La Cruz and President Trump carried by wide margins in 2024. The Democratic nominee, Bobby Pulido, is a popular Tejano musician who has never before sought public office. Ms. De La Cruz is considered a more moderate member of the House, especially on the issue of immigration. She is currently running an ad featuring a detainee whom she helped free from ICE custody, and has co-sponsored the Dignity Act, a bill aimed at providing work permits and a pathway to citizenship for some migrants. After the Texas state legislature redrew the state’s congressional maps last summer, Ms. De La Cruz’s district lines went largely unchanged. Mr. Trump carried the new district by nearly 18 points in the last election. According to a new survey sponsored by a Democratic group, Mr. Pulido now has a large lead over Ms. De La Cruz, however. The poll from House Majority PAC shows Mr. Pulido leading the congresswoman by 13 points, with the generic congressional ballot in the district showing a seven-point lead for Democrats. Two other polls from House Majority PAC showed Mr. Pulido with single-digit leads over the summer. The poll showing Mr. Pulido with such a large lead is the latest warning sign that Republicans could suffer incredibly heavy losses among Latino voters come November. Ms. De La Cruz’s district has the third-highest percentage of Hispanic voters in the nation, with just under 79 percent of the district’s residents being of Hispanic descent. Several polls have shown Hispanic voters in Texas swinging significantly back toward Democrats after the party began losing ground among the demographic since 2016. That year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton carried the Texas Hispanic vote by 30 points. In 2024, Mr. Trump won the Texas Hispanic vote by 11 points. According to the most recent polls, Hispanics seem to be headed back toward their 2016 preference for Democrats. A poll from Fox News on Thursday showed the Democratic Senate nominee, James Talarico, winning the Hispanic vote by 29 points. Another poll from Emerson College shows Mr. Talarico with a narrower lead — 15 percent — over his Republican opponent.
