Spencer Pratt Has God’s Endorsement for Mayor of Los Angeles, He Says

Reality television personality Spencer Pratt is running for mayor of Los Angeles not only because he believes he can improve the city, but because God told him to, he claimed in a recent interview.The 42-year-old former star of “The Hills” says he received a divine message on the day of his first debate against Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Nithya Raman earlier this month, he told Vanity Fair in an interview published Wednesday.“Before the debate all day long, I’m praying to Jesus. I’m on my knees like, ‘God, if you want me to be the mayor, have me destroy these two demonic entities that are representing themselves as city officials,'” Mr. Pratt said, referring to Ms. Bass and Ms. Raman. “And if you don’t want me to be mayor, God, I’ll know right after the debate.”God delivered a verdict. “After I walked off that stage, I was like, ‘Okay, God, I see you. You want me to be the mayor of L.A.,'” Mr. Pratt added.Mr. Pratt identifies as a Christian, though he told Vanity Fair he is less “strict Bible-Jesus” than his wife and former “The Hills” costar Heidi Montag, and instead understands Jesus “in the multiverse.” He added: “Like someone hid my version of Jesus’ scripture because only certain people are ready for it, because you end up being the mayor if you tap in.” The comments offer further insight into his motivations for seeking to lead Los Angeles without any prior political experience. Mr. Pratt announced his mayoral bid in January, on the one-year anniversary of the devastating Pacific Palisades wildfires, which killed 12 people and destroyed more than 6,000 homes, including his own.He has since gained traction through vociferous criticism of Ms. Bass’s wildfire response and a series of viral campaign videos that harnessed his camera savvy to take aim at California’s political establishment.In recent weeks, Mr. Pratt has drawn support from several high-profile celebrities and political figures, including actor Dennis Quaid, podcaster Joe Rogan, former acting director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell, and President Trump, who said last week that he would “like to see” Mr. Pratt “do well.”Mr. Pratt is registered as a Republican, though he has sought to distance himself from political labels, calling the race “non-partisan.” He has also declined to identify as “MAGA.” Recent polls place him second in the primary behind Ms. Bass. An Emerson College survey put Ms. Bass at 30 percent among likely voters, Mr. Pratt at 22 percent, and Ms. Raman third at 19 percent. His fundraising has also been gaining ground, as his campaign raised more in contributions than any other candidate over the last reporting period.
