Tensions Flare in Downtown Los Angeles as Police Clash with Protesters Over Immigration Raids

A widespread demonstration against federal immigration enforcement escalated into a confrontation between protesters and law enforcement in downtown Los Angeles on Friday evening, resulting in the deployment of chemical agents and multiple arrests. The unrest in Los Angeles was part of a nationwide wave of “ICE Out Everywhere” actions organized in response to the recent shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti involving federal agents in Minneapolis. While the day began with peaceful rallies, tensions mounted significantly as crowds converged on the Metropolitan Detention Center.According to the Los Angeles Police Department, thousands initially gathered at City Hall in the afternoon. However, the situation deteriorated when a group marched to the federal detention center. Police said that a “mob of violent agitators” swarmed the loading dock area, pushing a large construction dumpster to block the building’s entrance.In response, the LAPD placed the city on a tactical alert and issued dispersal orders around 5:45 p.m. for the area near Alameda Street. Authorities confirmed that federal agents were being struck with “debris, bottles and other objects,” leading to the declaration of an unlawful assembly.“We had hoped that demonstrations today would be peaceful, however, as you can see in this video, the violent agitators invited LAPD due to their actions,” the department wrote in a statement accompanying footage of the unrest.Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic environment as officers moved to clear the streets. Tensions escalated when law enforcement pushed into a crowd of approximately 200 people. From a window above the detention center’s entrance, officers utilized tables as shields while firing what appeared to be nonlethal rounds into the crowd, the Los Angeles Times reported.An officer positioned on the rooftop was seen aiming an orange nonlethal rifle at protesters, firing at least five rounds. A green and yellow irritant was deployed, enveloping demonstrators in a large cloud.The LAPD confirmed that less-than-lethal force was authorized due to violence against officers. The department noted that one individual was arrested after allegedly using a slingshot to fire hard metal objects at police.Mayor Karen Bass addressed the situation during a Friday evening news conference, confirming five arrests for failure to disperse. While emphasizing the validity of the demonstrators’ cause, she warned that violent tactics could backfire.“I think the protests are extremely important, but it is equally important for these protests to be peaceful, for vandalism not to take place,” Ms. Bass said. “That does not impact the administration in any kind of way that is going to bring about any type of change.”Ms. Bass further suggested that the violence played into the hands of federal hardliners. “Exactly what I believe this administration wants to see happen,” she said, adding, “Don’t be surprised if the military reenters our city.”Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a California Democrat who attended the protest earlier in the day, defended the crowd standing before officers in riot gear.“What I see here at the detention center are people exercising their constitutional rights,” Ms. Waters said. “And of course, they’re now trying to tear gas everybody. It’s in the air, but people are not moving.”The protests were fueled not only by the deaths in Minneapolis but also by local tensions regarding immigration sweeps. Ms. Bass linked the unrest to the recent high-profile arrest of former CNN host Don Lemon, who was arrested in Los Angeles after being charged with conspiracy to deprive rights during an anti-ICE protest in Minnesota.“Here you have a world-renowned reporter, Don Lemon. No one questions that he is a reporter and for him to be arrested for doing his job and for them to attempt to restrict his ability to do his job, was just an egregious misuse of our justice system,” Ms. Bass said. “And I think about this every day that this is the 250th year of our democracy, and I just wonder how much more our democracy will be eroded with this administration.”Organizers behind the “National Shutdown” say the goal of the demonstrations is to pressure the administration to defund the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and halt deportations. The protests, which called for a cessation of work, school, and shopping, were scheduled to continue through Saturday.
