The Man Who Won’t Die, or Won’t Be Found: The Mystery of Esmail Qaani

Since the opening salvos of America and Israel’s war against Iran lit up the skies over Tehran on February 28, the Islamic Republic has lost its supreme leader, significant swaths of its ballistic missile program, and much of its senior military command.What it cannot account for is the whereabouts of the one man who was supposed to be holding the whole thing together.The commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, General Esmail Qaani, has largely disappeared from public view since the war broke out. In his absence, the speculation has become as dangerous to Tehran as any missile strike. The rumors sweeping social media and regional outlets range from house arrest to execution to, in the most dramatic version, defection to Israel. None has been confirmed. Tehran has offered no credible accounting of where he is.Yet the silence itself has become the story, and for a regime already fighting for survival, the question of what happened to its most important surviving military commander may prove as destabilizing as any missile that has fallen on Iranian soil.The man with nine livesGeneral Qaani had long been a man who buried his colleagues. Over roughly two years, he escaped strike after strike that killed the commanders around him — in Damascus, in Beirut, during the 12-Day War — walking away each time while many of Iran’s most senior figures did not. The pattern was consistent enough, and the body count around him high enough, that the nickname stuck: “the man with nine lives.”General Qaani was said to have left a building shortly before an Israeli strike on April 1, 2024, that killed seven IRGC commanders in Damascus, including the Quds Force’s Syria-Lebanon chief, General Mohammad Reza Zahedi. He was also reported absent before the bombardment in Beirut on September 27, 2024, that killed Mr. Nasrallah, along with IRGC deputy commander Abbas Nilforoushan. He was further reported to have left a building shortly before senior Iranian military officials were targeted during the June 2025 12-Day War.Each time, the pattern was the same: men around him died, and he walked away. On June 13, 2025 — the opening day of the 12-Day War — numerous outlets reported, citing unnamed Iranian sources, that General Qaani had been killed in an Israeli strike alongside other senior military officials. Israel never claimed to have targeted him, the report was never officially confirmed, and his reappearance eleven days later proved it was inaccurate.Twelve days later, General Qaani turned up at a public celebration in Tehran’s Revolution Square, wearing civilian clothes and a black baseball cap, appearing in good health. Iranian media did not explain his disappearance or his whereabouts during the war, fueling further speculation.A nearly identical sequence played out in October 2024. General Qaani had been conspicuously absent after traveling to Beirut two days after the massive Israeli airstrike that killed Mr. Nasrallah and several other top commanders, including IRGC deputy commander Mr. Nilforoushan.Sources described him as being under interrogation. Sky News Arabic reported that General Qaani, in the course of interrogations by the IRGC, had suffered a heart attack and was rushed to a hospital. The report also said General Qaani’s chief of staff, Ehsan Shafiqi, was under scrutiny. He eventually resurfaced on state television on October 15 at the funeral of Mr. Nilforoushan in Tehran. The cycle of death rumors, mysterious absence, and reappearance had become almost routine.Until now.The strike that changed everythingDuring his tenure, the Axis of Resistance has been shattered. Mr. Nasrallah is dead. Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on July 31, 2024. Dozens of senior Iranian commanders have been eliminated. And on February 28, a joint American-Israeli operation killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei alongside several of Iran’s most senior security figures. General Qaani, the commander directly responsible for managing the regional proxy network during a regional war, was not mentioned among those killed.That survival, at the moment of the Islamic Republic’s maximum catastrophe, is what broke the dam. Claims surfaced on social media that he operated under the codename “Agent 47” and had coordinated Israeli airstrikes against the Iranian leadership. Unverified reports on social media said General Qaani had been executed. . Iranian officials did not immediately dispute the reports in Western media about reports that General Qaani was arrested in Iran on espionage charges, interrogated, and later executed (they later would deny the reports).Senior Fellow at the Soufan Group, Colin Clarke, tells the Sun that the question of General Qaani’s loyalties cuts to the heart of what has made this war so disorienting for Tehran. “Either Qaani is a Mossad mole, or the Israelis are killing everyone around him and allowing him to live to make him look like a mole,” Mr. Clarke says. “He seems to evade every Israeli airstrike, while all the other senior Iranian military and intelligence leaders get clipped.”The Quds Force’s operations in Lebanon were also being actively dismantled in parallel. The IDF eliminated Ali Zadeh on March 3, who had been serving as the temporary replacement for slain Quds Force Lebanon commander Hassan Mahdavi, killed in Damascus in April 2024, in a strike in Tehran. Mr. Zadeh had previously commanded the Quds Force’s Strategic Weapons Corps and played a central role in arming Hezbollah with precision weapons. His death, in the heart of the Iranian capital, underscored just how thoroughly the infrastructure General Qaani was supposed to be commanding had been penetrated by the Israeli spies, then dismantled around him.Tehran’s denial and the intelligence questionIran’s ambassador to Baghdad, Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadeq, rejected the allegations and said General Qaani had not been executed, stating that he was “in the field and personally directing the war.” Iranian officials characterized the claims as disinformation, further arguing that forcing General Qaani to appear publicly to debunk the reports would allow his current position to be electronically localized for a subsequent targeted strike.Senior Director of the Iran Program at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, Behnam Ben Taleblu, tells the Sun it is nearly impossible to verify claims that General Qaani served as a mole or spy for a foreign intelligence service. “But all that can be said is under his tenure the Quds Force has become a shadow of itself,” he continues, underscoring that Tehran’s silence is telling, with some hardline outlets only occasionally moving to dispel the new rumors. “It’s too soon to speculate, but this is one area where the fog of war has certainly set in.”Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and senior advisor at United Against Nuclear Iran Saeid Golkar tells the Sun that the uncertainty around General Qaani and his deputy, Mohammad Reza Fallah Zadeh, whose own whereabouts have generated separate speculation, suggests “either deep internal disruption, a serious security lockdown, or a deliberate effort by Tehran to keep the Quds Force leadership opaque.” Mr. Golkar, meanwhile, cautions that the espionage rumors, verified or not, are themselves a weapon. “They show how information warfare is being used to sow penetration, mistrust, and a loss of control within the regime,” he observes. “If Qaani is alive, the regime may prefer silence over proof of life because a public appearance could reveal weakness, location, or internal disarray.”Israel had published a list of Iranian and Iran-linked officials it wanted eliminated in the opening strikes of February 28. General Qaani’s name was not on it — an omission that cuts both ways. Either Israel already considers him dealt with, considers him an asset not to be eliminated, or never viewed him as a high-value target.Mr. Clarke notes that the problem is that Israel has proven it has Iran “totally wired,” having managed to penetrate seemingly every echelon of Iran’s defense structure. “So even though it seems far-fetched, it’s still entirely plausible that Qaani was an Israeli asset,” he explains. “Or it’s possible that he never was, but that the Iranians believed him to be, and detained or killed him.”A commander already in the shadowsWhatever the truth of his current fate, the uncertainty fits a pattern that predates the war. Unlike Qassem Soleimani, who cultivated a public persona, met openly with militia leaders, and operated almost as a head of state, General Qaani became deeply worried about his personal safety after Israel struck a target in Lebanon close to his location. That caution deepened his fears of assassination and impacted his willingness to develop relationships through face-to-face meetings with proxy leadership.That instinct for invisibility, which may once have kept him alive, has now made him impossible to account for. As Iran fights for its survival against American and Israeli strikes, the question of who actually controls the Quds Force, the institution built to manage Iran’s entire network of regional proxies, has no clean answer. Mr. Taleblu emphasizes that it is unclear who is leading the regime’s external operations or serving as the main point of contact with groups like Lebanese Hezbollah. “This is a result of the military pressure that Israel has been able to sustain against the regime and Hezbollah over the last two years,” he says. “But if past is prologue, these are as much network-centric ties as they are purely personal, and just because a name and face can’t be put to the long arm of terror doesn’t mean there is a relationship limping along in the background.”Mr. Clarke tells the Sun that, with the chain of command decimated, the Quds Force may be paralyzed. “It’s anyone’s guess what the thinking is,” he says. “It’s imperative for the remaining IRGC leadership to practice strict operational security, or risk being eliminated in an Israeli targeted assassination.”Whether General Qaani is directing a war, sitting in an Iranian cell, lying in an unmarked grave, or somewhere else entirely, former CIA officer Del Wilber tells the Sun he suspects that General Qaani is dead, killed either in an earlier Mossad assassination operation or during the current military campaign. As for what comes next, Mr. Wilber warned that even if the Iranian regime is nearing collapse, the most committed ideologues are unlikely to stand down. “The die-hard ‘Twelvers’ believe they’re on a mission from God,” he adds. “I wouldn’t expect them just to give up.”
