From the marbled halls of the Trump Taj Mahal Casino to the questionable curriculum of Trump University, his name has sold everything from Trump Steaks and Trump Vodka to Trump Mobile phones, an exclusive Trump Gold Card, and even the digital cryptocurrency $Trump coin. Since his return to office, that same insatiable appetite for personal branding has breached the walls of the federal government.While American history is filled with streets, cities, and monuments honoring former leaders — think Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards or the nation’s capital itself — the current administration has taken self-promotion to a level rarely seen in the public sector.As the United States gears up for its 250th anniversary this year, the push to cement the 47th president’s name and likeness across the American landscape has accelerated. From the money in citizens’ wallets to the passports they carry abroad, the federal government is undergoing a massive, Trump-themed makeover.The Semiquincentennial Currency OverhaulPerhaps the most widely visible change will be in the hands of the American public. In a historic break from a tradition spanning over 165 years, the Treasury Department recently announced that Mr. Trump’s signature will appear on future U.S. paper currency, starting with the $100 bill. Historically, paper money has only carried the signatures of the treasury secretary and the treasurer.Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent championed the move as part of the country’s semiquincentennial celebrations. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance, and fiscal strength and stability,” Mr. Bessent said. “There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S. dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial.”U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach echoed the sentiment. “As the 250th anniversary of our great nation approaches, American currency will continue to stand as a symbol of prosperity, strength, and the unshakable spirit of the American people under President Trump’s leadership,” Mr. Beach said. He add: “The President’s mark on history as the architect of America’s Golden Age economic revival is undeniable. Printing his signature on the American currency is not only appropriate, but also well deserved.”The U.S. Mint is also preparing a $1 coin featuring the president’s face, alongside a 24-karat gold commemorative coin approved by the Commission of Fine Arts. Defending the gold coin, Mr. Beach said, “As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins than that of our serving President, Donald J. Trump.”The currency changes have sparked fierce legislative blowback. Representative Jimmy Gomez introduced a bill to prohibit any sitting president’s signature on U.S. currency. “I introduced this bill because no sitting president should be allowed to use the nation’s currency to personally promote themselves,” the California Democrat said in a statement. “Trump wants to slap his name on buildings, airports, and now the dollar bill, but U.S. currency belongs to the American people, not the president. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum defended the move: “It is the department’s honor to showcase the America the Beautiful pass honoring America’s 250th anniversary and the generations who have protected our lands.”In Washington, D.C., federal buildings have become billboards for the president. Massive banners bearing Mr. Trump’s face have been draped over the Department of Justice, the Department of Labor, and the Department of Agriculture.More controversially, Mr. Trump’s name has been physically plastered onto prominent D.C. institutions. Following a board takeover, a famed performing arts venue was rebranded as “The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt justified the change, claiming it was “because of the unbelievable work President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building.”Legal challenges swiftly followed. Lawyers for a Democratic congresswoman, Joyce Beatty, argued that Congress intended the venue “as a memorial to John F. Kennedy — and to no one else.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries noted the president has “no authority to actually rename the Kennedy Center in the absence of legislative action.”A similar situation unfolded at the United States Institute of Peace, another D.C. building. Mr. Trump touted the initiative as “a very big deal,” intended “to save a lot of money and be healthy.” In addition, the One Big Beautiful Bill established government-seeded investment funds for babies to be known as Trump Accounts.
