The Yale Report

A new report from Yale University on the causes of mistrust in higher education confirms what many already knew to be true: that universities themselves are to blame for losing the public’s confidence. That it took a dedicated ten-member committee a full year to reach such a conclusion does Yale no favors. Though some of what the report’s authors found along the way is worth examining. A decade ago, 57 percent of Americans expressed confidence in our country’s colleges and universities. By 2024, that number dropped to an all-time low of 36 percent. Though trust improved marginally in 2025, some 70 percent of Americans still said that higher education was moving in the wrong direction. For this trend the committee identifies three main culprits: the high cost, opaque admissions, and political homogeneity. On cost, “there is little divide between Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals, those attending public and private universities,” the report notes. “Nearly everyone agrees that the cost of higher education is too high.” At Yale, one year of tuition runs $69,900. Meanwhile the national median household income stands at $84,000. One in five students will receive a full ride, but many others will leave carrying significant debt.Next the report confronts Yale’s 4.2 percent acceptance rate and suspicion about who makes the cut and why. It references studies that show wealthy applicants disproportionately benefit from the process through athletics or legacy preferences. It concludes that when “admissions seem so inexplicable — or, worse, tilted in ways that benefit the already advantaged — it should come as no surprise that many Americans do not trust the process.” The report also addresses — albeit briefly — universities’ use of racial preferences in admissions. The practice expanded in the 2000s as institutions prioritized building racially diverse classes. In 2023 it was outlawed with the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard. A survey the following year found broad support for that outcome, with 74 percent of adults agreeing that race should not be a factor in admissions. Finally, there’s the question of “what is said and taught on university campuses.” The report repeats longstanding criticism that universities are ideologically lopsided — at Yale, registered Democrats outnumber Republican faculty 36 to one — and raises concerns about activist professors injecting politics into the classroom. The committee also presents troubling evidence of student self-censorship. The report rounds out its diagnosis with concerns about grade inflation, technology use, bureaucratic expansion, and loss of institutional purpose. It traces Yale’s drift back to 2016 when the school expanded its mission statement beyond the creation and dissemination of knowledge to include “improving the world today,” educating “aspiring leaders worldwide,” and fostering “an ethical, interdependent, and diverse community.” The Yale report arrives the same week that Representative Elise Stefanik published her own account of elite higher education’s unraveling, “Poisoned Ivies.” Ms. Stefanik’s story begins with the 2023 congressional hearing that led to the resignations of Harvard and Penn’s presidents and made her the face of the reckoning over campus antisemitism after October 7, 2023. But she traces the decline back further than the pitch of the first anti-Israel tent city. “The explosion of antisemitism on campus in the wake of October 7 was not a coincidence,” Ms. Stefanik writes. “It was the result of years of rot deep within our most prestigious institutions of higher learning. Our elite universities chose ideological fanaticism over intellectual diversity. They chose groupthink over independence. They chose spineless moral bankruptcy instead of strong, principled leadership.” Which brings us back to the Yale report. The authors close with a long list of recommendations, from implementing stronger free speech protections to lowering tuition costs. The first of the bunch strikes us as particularly important: “To take responsibility” — to “admit where we have been wrong and where we might improve.” For Yale’s leaders, picking up a copy of Ms. Stefanik’s book looks to us like a good place to start.
