Venezuela defeated Italy tonight, 4-2, in the WBC (Baseball!) Semifinal. They are looking really great.“Good things are happening to Venezuela lately! I wonder what this magic is all about? STATEHOOD, #51, ANYONE?”The timing of his latest message — meant in jest or otherwise — was striking given it comes two months after Mr. Trump ordered a military operation on January 3 to capture Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his entire family at their compound in Caracas.Mr. Maduro is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York alongside singer R. Kelly and accused murderer Luigi Magione. Until Mr. Trump’s social media post, the Classic had largely remained free of the political friction that surrounded the most recent Winter Olympics and threatens to cast a shadow over the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.Players, instead, have focused on the rare opportunity to compete alongside fellow major leaguers for their country in a celebratory atmosphere. The result has been a tournament defined by dramatic games, passionate crowds and international pride.New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who serves as the captain for Team USA, said the event felt “bigger and better than the World Series,” emphasizing the passion surrounding international baseball. “The passion that these fans have representing their country, representing some of their favorite players, there’s nothing like it,” Mr. Judge said.American pitcher Paul Skenes, who was dominant in beating the Dominican Republic 2-1 in the semifinals, described representing the United States as a moment of pride and unity, focusing on the responsibility of wearing the national uniform and competing against the world’s best players.“It’s been unbelievable, just sharing a clubhouse with all these guys for two weeks,” Mr. Skenes said, adding, “It’s just an unbelievable group of guys.”The patriotic tone surrounding Team USA has extended beyond the playing field. A prolific baseball nation which has produced more than 500 major league players, Venezuela was eliminated by the Americans, 9-7, in the semifinals three years ago. Not only is the current matchup a chance for redemption, but it’s also a shot at capturing its first WBC title.A dark horse when the tournament began, Venezuela defeated Shohei Ohtani and defending champion Japan in the quarterfinal before beating Italy, which entered the semifinal undefeated.For veteran infielder Eugenio Suarez, who plays for the Cincinnati Reds, the opportunity carries deep personal meaning, inspired by the sea of flags and chants throughout the tournament.“I’m so happy to be able to do this for my family, for our crowd, our people from Venezuela,” he said. “It’s a dream come true. I never thought in my life that I’m going to represent my country and do it in front of our crowd here in Miami and do it for all the Venezuelans in Venezuela. This is beautiful.”The Americans last won the WBC in 2017 when they defeated Puerto Rico. An American victory Tuesday night could prompt an invitation to the White House. But that’s unlikely to happen, considering players will scatter back to their respective spring training camps throughout Arizona and Florida to continue preparations for the opening of the 2026 regular season.
