Trump-Backed Candidate Wins Republican Senate Runoff in Louisiana

Congresswoman Julia Letlow cruised to victory Saturday in a Louisiana runoff election for the Republican nomination to run for the U.S. Senate seat in November, a race that heavily favors Republicans in the Pelican State. In January, President Trump endorsed Ms. Letlow in a bid to oust Senator Bill Cassidy. Dr. Cassidy had voted to convict Mr. Trump in 2021 on impeachment charges.Dr. Cassidy was already facing a challenge from Louisiana state treasurer John Fleming, who declined to drop out after Mr. Trump made his endorsement. Dr. Cassidy finished third in the primary vote and Ms. Letlow and Dr. Fleming advanced to a runoff election.“Great News!!! Julia Letlow WON in Louisiana, beating conclusively a very strong and smart opponent,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social. “Congratulations to Julia. She will be a truly GREAT Senator! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”Ms. Letlow has pledged loyalty to the president and featured Mr. Trump in her campaign ads, one of the sticking points between her and the incumbent in the Senate primary. “I am so filled with gratitude for the greatest president this country has ever had, Donald J. Trump,” Ms. Letlow told supporters at her victory party. “I am also so incredibly grateful for your endorsement,” she added.“The people of Louisiana chose a proven conservative who will always stand with President Trump, fight for our values, and put our great state first,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise wrote in an X post.“Congratulations to my friend and colleague @jbletlow on her victory in the Senate run-off in Louisiana!” Congresswoman Elise Stefanik wrote in an X post.Ms. Letlow will face Jamie Davis in the November 3 general election. Mr. Davis is a farmer from rural northeast Louisiana and overwhelmingly won the Democratic runoff over business owner Gary Crockett. “I’m not running this race to play games or arguments or even make history. I came to get things done,” Mr. Davis told supporters Saturday evening.Ms. Letlow is heavily favored to win the race. No Democrat has won a U.S. Senate seat in 18 years. Mr. Trump carried the state by 22 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.Ms. Letlow would become Louisiana’s first female Republican senator if elected. She was elected to Congress in a special election to fill a seat her husband won. Luke Letlow died from Covid complications in 2020 days before he was set to be sworn into office.
