Trump Doubles Down on AI Companies Self-Regulating, Says Only Change Will Be Renaming Technology ‘Super Intelligence’

President Trump on Tuesday, after holding a meeting with dozens of the nation’s leading AI executives, doubled down on his assertion that no new regulations of the technology are necessary. He says the consensus in the room was that “tremendous self-regulation” was enough.Mr. Trump has been a stalwart defender of the development of AI with few — if any — guardrails. He says the primary goal should be outpacing China in the development of AI, and argues that communities should be building data centers as quickly as possible despite pushback from communities across the country. “We have a very big lead and we’re gonna keep our lead,” Mr. Trump said in the East Room after his lunch with executives and top administration officials. He was joined by Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, xAI’s Elon Musk, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, whose recent essay on the need for an AI development slowdown sparked concerns across the country about the technology. CIA director John Ratcliffe, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, and House Speaker Mike Johnson were also in attendance. “There are those that say it’s bigger than the Industrial Revolution,” the president told reporters. “It could be substantially bigger.” He says the only action he is planning to take at this time is to sign an order on Tuesday night renaming artificial intelligence to “super intelligence” in government documents. “There was a lot of commonality in this room,” Mr. Trump continued. “There’s a belief that there should be tremendous self-regulation and we automatically have regulation with the Department of Justice, the FBI, all of that, but the self-regulation is very important.”Mr. Trump again defended the building of data centers, saying that the companies involved in construction should be doing more for the communities that choose to build them. He says some of the executives said during the meeting that they would help supply energy for the buildings in order to keep down costs and that they may even help build schools for those localities that choose to embrace data centers. “I think they’re going to do things for the community that will be really financially beneficial,” Mr. Trump said. The president and his administration — as well as some congressional leaders, including Mr. Johnson — have taken a more libertarian approach to the AI issue, arguing that the technology will ultimately be beneficial to the United States. In a Truth Social post earlier this month, Mr. Trump declared that his administration will “not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry.” In another post, he called safety concerns about AI a “hoax.”“AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX,” he wrote. “President Xi, of China, just announced that China will be doing absolutely nothing to stand in the way of AI, or its future.”The polling on AI has been especially bad for both the companies and Mr. Trump himself. A survey from Hart Research found that 50 percent of Americans believe the technology is being developed too quickly, while only two percent believe development is moving too slowly. Slightly more than one-quarter of Americans — 28 percent — say the technology is developing at the right pace. According to another poll from Politico, a plurality of Trump 2024 voters — 44 percent — believe the technology is moving too quickly. A third poll from Quinnipiac found the overwhelming majority of Americans, or 71 percent, would be more likely to vote for a candidate if they support stricter guardrails on AI development.
