The order seeks to prevent any competing college football broadcasts, particularly those tied to the expanding College Football Playoff — from airing during the game’s traditional window on the second Saturday in December.“The annual Army-Navy game is truly one of the most special occasions in all of sports,” Mr. Trump said during a White House ceremony honoring Navy’s 2025 team for its 17-16 victory over Army in December to win the Commander in Chief’s Trophy. “But in recent years, the College Football Playoff expansion has encroached on this sacred four-hour time slot.”The executive order states that “no college football game, specifically the College Football Playoff or other postseason games be broadcast in a manner that directly conflicts with the Army-Navy game.”Mr. Trump said he was signing the executive order to ensure the Army-Navy game is preserved exclusively for the second Saturday in December. “Nobody’s playing football — not Ohio State against Notre Dame, not LSU against Alabama, nobody’s going to play football for four hours during that very special time of year in December,” he said. “It’s preserved forever for the Army-Navy game.”The Army-Navy game is a standalone matchup that sits between conference championship weekend and the CFP. This year, the game is scheduled for Dec. 12, while the CFP begins the following week. If the CFP is expanded, the first-round games could be the same weekend as Army-Navy, creating a potential conflict.Though Mr. Trump can issue the executive order, it remains to be seen whether college football schedule makers and networks will be legally bound to adhere to it. In recent days, Mr. Trump backed the Federal Communications Commission chairman, Brendan Carr, who threatened to revoke broadcast licenses over news coverage of the US.-Israeli war in Iran.The president called media organizations “corrupt and highly unpatriotic” in a recent Truth Social post, and singled out late night “morons, who get gigantic salaries for horrible ratings.”Mr. Carr has said he would deny or revoke government-issued licenses if broadcasters run what the agency deems “fake news.”The executive order surrounding the Army-Navy game theoretically gives Mr. Carr the ability to revoke the license of any broadcaster that schedules a conflicting college football game. CBS, which has broadcast the Army-Navy game since 1996, has the rights to the game through 2038.“America’s Game stands as a symbol of excellences and our great national spirit,” Mr. Carr said in a statement. “It is important that we continue to reserve a window of time on the second Saturday in December exclusively for this important event.”
