Trump Cuts Short Historic Attendance at Supreme Court Oral Arguments Over Birthright Citizenship

President Trump on Wednesday decided to leave Supreme Court oral arguments early as the justices were grappling with how to handle his birthright citizenship executive order. According to his schedule, he had a planned Easter lunch to attend at the White House. Mr. Trump is now the only sitting president to have attended Supreme Court oral arguments. He announced on Tuesday that he would be going in order to highlight the importance of his executive order to try to restrict the birthright citizenship afforded to those born in America whose parents were not in the country legally. After listening to just about 80 minutes of arguments — roughly half the total argument time on Wednesday — Mr. Trump got into his motorcade and headed back to the White House, according to the press pool. According to a New York Times reporter who was inside the chamber for the arguments, Mr. Trump abruptly stood up while a lawyer for the plaintiffs was speaking and left the room followed by two others. Once he returned home, Mr. Trump offered a brief assessment of how he felt about the case. “We are the only Country in the World STUPID enough to allow ‘Birthright’ Citizenship!” the president wrote on Truth Social. Outside of the court on Wednesday, a large group of protestors held signs, chanted, and took turns delivering speeches in defense of the longstanding birthright citizenship guarantee. Celebrity chef José Andrés gave a rousing speech at one point. “Today is not about defending a constitutional right,” Mr. Andrés told the crowd.“Today is about so much more. Today is about defending the pure idea of what America is and will be.”The birthright citizenship case argued Wednesday has drawn immense attention, especially from Mr. Trump’s most ardent anti-immigrant supporters. White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller wrote on X that giving birthright citizenship to the children of those illegally in the United States will facilitate the theft of the American dream. “Birthright citizenship means the children of illegal aliens can vote to tax your children and seize their inheritance,” Mr. Miller wrote more than an hour after oral arguments had begun. One lawmaker, Senator Eric Schmitt, was reacting to arguments live in a thread he set up on X. By the end of arguments, the thread had amassed more than three dozen posts of Mr. Schmitt’s legal analysis. He previously served as Missouri’s attorney general. In a summary of the arguments posted later, Mr. Schmitt conceded that the final vote from the justices is going to be “close.”“The Supreme Court must protect American citizenship and strike down the scam that is Birthright Citizenship,” he wrote in X.
