Tulsi Gabbard Resigns, Citing Husband’s Cancer Diagnosis, Amid Reports of Sidelining

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard resigned Friday, citing her desire to support her husband after his recent cancer diagnosis.In her statement of resignation, Ms. Gabbard said she “must step away from public service” while her husband “faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months” after being diagnosed with an “extremely rare form of bone cancer.”Describing her husband, Abraham, as her “rock,” she wrote that she “cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position.” She said her last day would be June 30 and pledged to ensure “no disruption in leadership or momentum.”A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Ms. Gabbard was forced out by the White House. In April, the Guardian reported that Mr. Trump had been privately asking advisors whether he should oust her. Mr. Trump nonetheless praised Ms. Gabbard warmly on Truth Social and announced that her principal deputy, Aaron Lukas, would serve as acting director. “Her wonderful husband, Abraham, has been recently diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, and she, rightfully, wants to be with him, bringing him back to good health as they currently fight a tough battle together,” Mr. Trump wrote. “I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever. Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her.” Ms. Gabbard’s resignation comes amid mounting reports that she had been sidelined in recent military operations, including the war in Iran and the capture of Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro. Ms. Gabbard, who ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, has long been a vocal critic of American military intervention.
