USGS Warns Venezuela Death Toll Could Rise Into Thousands After Twin Earthquakes

Authorities are warning that thousands may be dead in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck seconds apart, leveling buildings. The interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, said 164 deaths have been initially confirmed. A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit about 100 miles west of Caracas Wednesday evening, followed 39 seconds later by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The second one was the most powerful earthquake in Venezuela since 1900. Speaking on state television, Ms. Rodriguez said, “Dozens of buildings have collapsed, and we are currently carrying out very intense rescue efforts to save as many lives as God allows us to save.” At least 1,000 people have been injured, she said.The United States Geological Survey said that its predictive modeling estimates that the death toll will be in the thousands, possibly higher than 10,000. A website set up by Venezuelan opposition figures listed more than 10,000 people as unaccounted for.Several countries have offered support for Venezuela, including America, El Salvador, France, Mexico, and Russia.President Trump posted on Truth Social, “The U.S.A stands ready, willing, and able to help! I have instructed all agencies of our government to get ready to move quickly. We will be there for our new and great friends.”Ms. Rodriguez shared the post on X and thanked Mr. Trump, adding, “Venezuela will never forget the helping hand extended to our people in these difficult hours.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the State Department is “immediately” deploying search and rescue teams and humanitarian assistance. The earthquakes add to the woes of a country that is grappling with a financial crisis, with an annual inflation rate of around 500 percent.Ms. Rodriguez became the interim president after American forces captured her predecessor, Nicolas Maduro, in January. Since then, she has taken steps to increase oil production, and America has eased sanctions. However, anti-government protests have continued as Venezuelans struggle to pay for basic goods and services.
