Amar’e Stoudemire Trades His Basketball for a Badge and a Purpose

NBA Hall of Famer Amar’e Stoudemire embarked on an inspiring new chapter this week, graduating from the Miami Dade College School of Justice’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy after months of grueling physical and academic training.Mr. Stoudemire, 43, completed the 11-month program with special recognition, receiving the Harry “Coach” Everett Award for his leadership and contributions throughout his training. Officers are trained in crisis intervention, school-based community policing and specialized areas such as mental health and child development issues. The former professional basketball star will begin his duties by serving the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, dedicated to protecting students, staff, property and the educational process.Joining the ranks of law enforcement represents more than a post-retirement career pivot. It fulfills a lifelong ambition rooted in his upbringing.“It’s something I always wanted to do since I was a kid,” he told Sports Illustrated. “I remember back when I was in grade school, elementary school. They asked you on career day, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ And my initial response was a police officer. It runs in the family. My uncle was a captain. His brother was a deputy. My cousin is a captain. My sister’s in the academy. So, it’s a family tradition, basically.”Drafted right out of high school, Mr. Stoudemire played for the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat during his 14-season NBA career. He last appeared in the NBA during the 2015-16 season. He was a six-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection, averaging 21.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in his career. This past August, Mr. Stoudemire was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, though he didn’t tell anyone at the time that he was attending the Miami-Dade police academy, learning everything from CPR to conflict de-escalation.Mr. Stoudemire said training to become a police officer was similar to training to become a professional athlete. The physical conditioning included an endless amount of push-ups and running up to three miles per day. There was also ample classroom work, studying a 700-page law enforcement handbook, covering such things as first aid, defensive tactics, and vehicle operation.“This is something that I’ve really embraced,” he said. “I went through 848 hours of training in the academy, and then taking the state exam. The state exam consists of 200 questions. You have three hours, and you’re covering first aid to vehicle ops to law to legal, and you have to answer these questions correctly. You can’t get below 80% or you fail. So it was a serious approach.”Transitioning to law enforcement might seem like an unexpected move for someone who made more than $167 million over his NBA career. Yet, those who have followed his post-NBA life know he has consistently sought meaningful growth beyond athletics. He took college courses during his playing career, developing several business interests from movie production to kosher wine. He also wrote inspirational books about his young life targeting middle-school kids, and also developed a fashion line and collected art. “I just go to what I have passion for,” he said. “My passion drives me in directions that only I can follow.”After his last NBA game in 2016, he ventured to Israel where he continued to play professionally and embarked on a personal journey that led to receiving his Israeli citizenship in 2019 and converting to Orthodox Judaism.Mr. Stoudemire has said that his mother first brought up the concept of their Hebrew roots when he was 14 or so. During a difficult childhood, which involved poverty and the death of his father when he was 12, the young Stoudemire began to research Jewish history and various Black Hebrew movements. When he was 24, Mr. Stoudemire said he had an epiphany about Judaism as a religion and an “organized structure.” What ignited his passion was the idea of becoming more like a “prophet” and leading a more disciplined, righteous lifestyle.“I went from being an A-list celebrity, I was going to all the fashion shows, all the Met galas, all the operas, all the Broadway shows, I was on David Letterman, I was on Jimmy Kimmel, I was all over,” Mr. Stoudemire said. “But Israel was just pulling at me. It was definitely an experience for me, a humbling experience. I truly had to humble myself completely, to go from this top-level situation to more of a downgrade, but for the sake of Torah. So that was the idea and why I made that decision.”With his 6-foot-10 presence, Mr. Stoudemire brings that unique blend of life experiences, humility and dedication to his new role protecting Miami schools. He is eager to serve as a mentor and positive force for young people. “You’ve got to have a sense of professionalism,” he said. “You have to be able to communicate properly with the community, so I can help steer the next generation in the proper way and catch them before they get in trouble and try to provide some guidance.”
