Economic Engines vs. Political Pawns: Why NIL Capitalism Neutralizes Call for a Black Athlete Boycott

Will Snowden sits at the epicenter of modern college football. As CEO of Alpha Recruits, a premier athletic development and advisory firm based at Salt Lake City, Utah, Mr. Snowden trains high school and college athletes to refine their physical skills, aggressively markets his players to top-tier universities, structures complex Name, Image and Likeness contracts, and guides players and families through the transfer portal.And he’s also African American.His position in this high-stakes world of sports capitalism gives him a multi-layered perspective on the recent call by the NAACP and Congressional Black Caucus for black athletes to boycott the athletic programs in states pushing restrictive voting laws.While Mr. Snowden understands the historical weight of the movement, his view from the frontlines of recruiting tells him that the proposed boycott will ultimately have little impact. The reason can be summed up in three letters: NIL.“I love the sentiment,” Mr. Snowden told The New York Sun. “I wish it was that easy. But when you sign contracts and make a good amount of money, they’d be giving up a lot. I wish more black players would look at more West Coast and other conferences than the SEC when they have that opportunity. But it’s only going to make room for other people to come there, because it’s too hard to pass up life-changing financial gain. It’s a lot to ask of these young athletes because there’s so much on the line.”The NAACP launched its “Out of Bounds” campaign on Tuesday urging current and prospective black athletes, their families, alumni, and fans to “withhold athletic and financial support” from universities in states that have moved “to limit, weaken, or erase black voting representation.”The NAACP is targeting public universities at Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and South Carolina as states to boycott in response to a wave of redistricting in the aftermath of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that deemed illegal minority-majority districts permitted by the Voting Rights Act of 1965.Boycotts have been a tool to fight racial and social injustice for generations. But in the era of NIL, asking black athletes to forego the financial benefits that can come from playing major college football in the South impacts not only athletes but their parents as well.“Parents might rather their kid be somewhere else, until someone sits down with you and says, ‘You’re going to make $8 million over the next four years playing here,’” Mr. Snowden said. “You start to think about what that can do for your family. What kind of voice that gives you. Sometimes that outweighs political and social issues.”Mr. Snowden’s insights are not just professional, they’re personal. His youngest son, Smith, was a four-star recruit who played three seasons at the University of Utah before transferring to Michigan last winter where he’ll play this season. Schools in the South, including Ole Miss and South Carolina, weren’t considered “because of the issues in the South that we’re not comfortable with,” said Mr. Snowden, who grew up in Colorado and played football at BYU.Yet, he doesn’t hesitate to contact southern schools on behalf of his clients, feeling a fiduciary and professional responsibility to obtain the best offers possible. “My goal is to get attention and if you get the attention of an SEC school, it creates more attention,” he said. “I also understand the benefit of them being the SEC; a lot of eyes, a lot of draft picks, and a lot of great coaching.”An emphasis on regional recruiting also hampers calls for a boycott. Rosters in the SEC are largely constructed on home-grown athletes who have longed to play big-time football where their friends and families can watch them perform.“Players who have grown up in the South have dealt with racism all their lives,” Mr. Snowden said. “Black folks teach their families how to stay alive, how to survive, and how to make it in a racist world. And now NIL is offering the financial means to get away from that. Players will deal with whatever they have to deal with to make $2 or $3 million and then live where they want to live.”The president of the NAACP, Derrick Johnson, said parents should influence their children to support the boycott. “State-funded schools should not appreciate the talents of athletes on the courts or on the football field yet deny those same athletes and their families and individuals from their communities true participation in our democracy,” he said on The Tennessee Holler podcast.Conversely, critics have slammed the civil rights organization for treating young athletes as political leverage. A former NFL player, Jack Brewer, told Fox News, “I think this is ridiculous. The NAACP profits off division. They profit off a victimhood mentality. They’re going to take these kids that have already overcome so much and they’re going to use them as their pawns. It’s not right.”A former NFL wide receiver who played collegiately at Tennessee, Donte Stallworth, applauded the conversation but not the approach. “We have to acknowledge the hypocrisy of these states that use black bodies as economic engines on Saturdays and on Sunday they’re taking away the votes of all their family members. That part of it is real,” he said on CNN. “But it’s difficult for me to push on these 18 year olds to get them to make a decision of this magnitude at such a young age.”Ultimately, Mr. Snowden said he believes the unprecedented financial stability athletes are securing in the modern college landscape will ultimately be a catalyst for institutional change in the future. “Regardless of where they go to school, they can positively impact the future,” he said. “Whether it’s through business or government, they can work to improve racial, political, and social issues because they’ll have the education and financial means to do so.”
