Knicks Parade and World Cup Fever Leaves U.S. Open at Shinnecock Fighting for Attention

The U.S. Open golf tournament is historically designed to command the sports world’s undivided attention. The grueling four-day quest for survival is normally the centerpiece of the June calendar, especially when the major championship returns to an iconic cathedral like Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island.Yet, this year’s national championship arrives during a crowded moment in sports history, threatening to relegate one of golf’s grandest traditions to a secondary narrative. The New York sports landscape is utterly consumed by other interests.When the first-round of the U.S. Open tees off on Thursday, New York City will be celebrating its first NBA Championship in 53 years as the New York Knicks are honored with a ticker tape/shredded paper parade turning the day into a civic holiday for hundreds of thousands of long-suffering basketball fans.The parade begins at 10 a.m., just as the U.S. Open’s morning wave is battling Shinnecock’s brutal fescue. The procession will follow the traditional route up Broadway from Battery Park to City Hall where the team will be presented a Key to the City during a special ceremony.It’s the first time a Knicks championship will be celebrated with a ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes. Their prior championship wins in 1970 and 1973 did not receive that honor. Local news broadcasts will be squarely focused on the parade route rather than the putting surfaces at Shinnecock.“It will be the first ticker-tape parade in Knicks history, where New Yorkers will be able to celebrate a moment that has feels like we’ve waited an entire lifetime for because when it comes to people my age and a little bit older, we have,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement earlier this week. “There have been so many heartbreaks, so many near misses, so many years, every year where we’ve told ourselves it’s the year and for it to actually happen now, there’s nothing more we can ask for as New Yorkers.”If Knicks-mania isn’t enough to compete with, the U.S. Open is also being overshadowed by the FIFA World Cup underway across North America. Group stage matches are already flooding television schedules, social media feeds and conversation in living rooms and sports bars. The collision course peaks on Friday afternoon when the United States Men’s National Team plays its second match of the tournament against Australia in Los Angeles. The game kicks off at 3 p.m. EST, smack in the middle of the U.S. Open’s critical second round.Rory McIlroy, the back-to-back Masters Champion and Grand Slam winner, doesn’t mind the World Cup sharing the stage. “It’s nice that it’s on, especially this week,” he said he told reporters at Shinnecock. “It’s a good distraction to be able to go back from the golf course and turn the football on and forget about the golf for a little bit.”World No.1 Scottie Scheffler echoed those sentiments, admitting he has been swept up in both the Knicks historic run and the drama on the pitch. “I’m not a big soccer guy most of the year,” he said during a press conference. “I pretty much save all my sports for football. I actually really enjoyed watching the NBA Finals last week. But I think if you’re a fan of sport, which I am, you pretty much have to get into the World Cup. I’ve been able to watch a bit. Not as much as I’d hoped to, but I’m definitely paying attention.”Golf also has itself to blame for the U.S. Open becoming an early afterthought. The sport enters this week carrying the baggage from the Ryder Cup held at nearby Bethpage Black last September. The highly anticipated matches between the United States and Europe were supposed to be a defining moment of triumph for American golf, played at one of the sport’s most passionate and raucous venues.Instead, the United States was whipped by the Europeans on their home soil and the American crowd embarrassed itself with its crude behavior, especially toward Mr. McIlroy, who is willing to let bygones be bygones.“Was it a rough week for me at times? Absolutely,” Mr. McIlroy said of the Ryder Cup atmosphere. “But it is what it is. If that’s a price to pay to live the life that I’m living, then I’m okay with that.”Still, after years of anticipating that event, getting re-energized for the U.S. Open on Long Island less than 10 months later with everything else going on has proven difficult.Long before the Knicks began their playoff run, real estate agents on Long Island began sounding the alarm that demand for housing during the U.S. Open was not reaching expectations with many listings unrented.“We are finding that there isn’t as much demand as you would expect,” Judie Desiderio, a managing partner at William Raveis Real Estate in the Hamptons, told Bloomberg News. “Last-minute bookers can get house rentals for a relative bargain.”Perhaps by Sunday, golf will enter the spotlight it traditionally owns on Father’s Day, especially if Mr. Scheffler is in contention to win and capture the Career Grand Slam pushed by heavyweights like Mr. McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau or Brooks Koepka, who won the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock.If a star-studded leaderboard materializes, the roaring winds of Shinnecock may find a way to command everyone’s full attention once again.
