Last on the Leaderboard, First in Value: Tiger Woods’ Son Charlie Navigates Golf’s New Era

On one of junior golf’s biggest stages, Charlie Woods—son of the troubled 15-time major champion Tiger Woods — finished last at this month’s Junior Invitational at Sage Valley. Over four rounds, the 17-year-old struggled to a 26-over-par total, including an 83 in the third round that effectively sealed his place at the bottom of the 36-player field.For most young golfers, it would have been a difficult week, soon forgotten outside the tight-knit junior circuit. For Mr. Woods, it became a lightning rod for jokes and criticism, amplified by high expectations and comparisons with his famed father, who finds himself again in hot water over a rollover car crash and DUI charge.According to police, the elder Mr. Woods’ Land Rover clipped a truck pulling a trailer while attempting to overtake it on a narrow two-lane road at Jupiter, Florida, on Friday. His vehicle rolled onto its driver’s side, leaving both drivers apparently unhurt.A breathalizer test showed no evidence that the golfing legend had been consuming alcohol but he refused to submit to a urine test, leading to his arrest. Previously, Mr. Woods has been involved in three major vehicle-related incidents, one of which resulted in a criminal conviction.For the younger Mr. Woods, the disappointing finish at Sage Valley stood in contrast to another story that is unfolding off the course, one that speaks to the evolving economics of amateur golf, the power of visibility and the complicated reality of building a career in the sport’s modern era.Mr. Woods may have left Sage Valley at the bottom of the field, but he is the clear leader of something else: the rapidly expanding world of name, image and likeness.According to industry estimates, his NIL valuation has reached approximately $3 million, easily making him the most valuable figure in college golf before arriving on the campus of Florida State University where he intends to pursue his collegiate career in 2027.Mr. Woods’ NIL valuation puts him ahead of Jackson Koivun, a junior at Auburn, who had been the top earner in junior men’s golf with a valuation of $1.75 million. It also outpaces Kai Trump, the granddaughter of President Trump, who has an NIL valuation of $2.25 million and will attend the University of Miami next year.While he has yet to sign a major NIL deal, Mr. Woods’ valuation is driven by a combination of factors: his lineage, his visibility, his access to sport’s biggest stages and yes, his potential as a golfer. Mr. Woods is currently 17th on the Rolex AJGA rankings despite his tough week in South Carolina, where he finished 10 shots behind the next player on the leaderboard. The Junior Invitational is called the “junior Masters” because of the strong field it attracts and its location near Augusta National Golf Club, about 20 miles away.His rounds of 75-76-83-80 earned headlines while Miles Russell, the No. 1 ranked junior who successfully defended his title, went largely unnoticed by the national media. It’s part of the scrutiny and pressure that comes with being the son of one of the greatest golfers of all time.Whispers about whether the young Woods is overrated had quieted after he won the Team TaylorMade Invitational in May 2025, shooting 15-under over three rounds at Streamsong Resort. Winning that event launched him from No. 604 on the AJGA rankings to inside the top 20 and earned him exemptions for future events. “Just being able to say to myself that I have won an absolutely amazing event and say that I have performed under a high-pressure situation is huge going forward,” he said after the win. “I haven’t been able to say that I have done that, and now that I can, it is a big thing for my mental game.”That isn’t his only taste of success. He posted a top-10 at the Junior PGA Championship and added two more top 20s in AJGA invitationals. He also helped his high school team at the Benjamin School in South Florida to win a state championship with a team best 68.The consensus among coaches and scouts is that he has good athleticism and sound mechanics and most of all loves the game and figures to improve based on his connections.The young Woods regularly joins his father during practice rounds at Medalist Golf Club, their home course in Jupiter, Florida, where he also plays alongside other PGA Tour professionals like Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler.“The shots that he can hit, a lot of guys on Tour can’t hit,” Mr. Thomas, a two-time major winner, said of Charlie Woods. “He’s very, very impressive and I’m hoping for the best for him.”Mr. Thomas said being around professional golfers has helped Charlie Woods mature as a player and person. “He’s grown up a lot,” Mr. Thomas said before joking, “He’s still a little punk — not a total punk kid. He can beat me up, so I can’t say too much.”In anticipation of the NIL deals and other endorsement opportunities that will come his way, Mr. Woods has signed with Players Group Management, that same agency that represents Mr. Russell, his future teammate at Florida State.Mr. Russell, whose NIL valuation is $1 million, already has deals with TaylorMade, Nike and Liberty National Golf Club. Another top earner in men’s college golf is John Daly II, a senior at Arkansas, whose NIL valuation is $1.25 million.They are all part of a generation that blends athletic development with personal branding. Success is measured not only by what’s on the scorecard, but also by visibility and marketability. For Mr. Woods, the challenge is balancing those worlds and continuing to improve as a player while managing the expectations that come with his name and his earning potential.
