New WNBA Deal Reshapes Salaries, Power and the Future

LSU senior guard Flau’jae Johnson learned during the early rounds of the women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament that the WNBA and its players union had reached a new collective bargaining agreement.Widely projected to be a top selection in the upcoming WNBA Draft, Ms. Johnson summed up the moment into a blunt, celebratory truth. “I’m fixing to get paid,” she said.Her reaction was both personal and emblematic. The agreement, forged across 17 months of sometimes contentious negotiations, ended all threats of a potential work stoppage ahead of the 2026 season opener on May 2, and laid a framework to capitalize on the growing popularity of the league. And yes, the players got paid.Pay Us What You Owe UsThe arrival of young stars like Catlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, combined with the sustained excellence of veterans like Napheesa Collier, A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart has led to a surge in popularity and revenue for the league. A $2 billion media rights deal was signed in 2025 as television ratings and attendance reached all-time highs.Players, long accustomed to operating in the margins of growth, wanted a larger share and voted in October to opt-out of the old CBA agreement and begin discussion on a new deal between labor and management.Negotiations grew contentious with players wearing T-shirts that read, “Pay Us What You Owe Us,” before the All-Star Game, openly questioning the leadership of Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, and voting in December to authorize the union’s executive committee to call a strike if necessary.Closing the Gap-But Not EntirelyMarathon negotiations last week led to a tentative agreement that ensures players and the league have a stake in its continued growth. Under the new CBA, the players will receive 20 percent of the gross revenue, an increase from 9 percent. It falls short of the 40 percent originally sought and well under the 51 percent allotted to NBA players. But the increase gives WNBA players a larger share in the value they create.“For the first time, player salaries are tied to a truly meaningful share of league revenue, driving exponential growth in the salary cap, increasing average compensation beyond half a million dollars, and raising the professional standard across facilities, staffing, and support,” union president Nneka Ogwumike said in a statement. “It strengthens housing and retirement and expands resources for family planning and parental leave. “It redefines what it means to be a professional in this league.”Show Me The MoneyCentral to the negotiations was an increase in salary. Since the league’s inception in 1996, the WNBA has operated on modest salaries. Players have had to supplement their incomes by playing overseas in Russia and Europe and in emerging leagues like Unrivaled and Athletes Unlimited.Ms. Clark’s arrival in 2024 after a legendary collegiate career at Iowa, brought the WNBA salaries to the forefront. She made $76,535 her rookie year, while generating $36 million for WNBA through attendance, merchandise sales, and television. One of every six tickets sold in the WNBA could be linked to Ms. Clark.That’s changing to everyone’s benefit. According to reports, the salary cap will jump from $1.5 million to about $7 million per team. Supermax contracts for elite players increase from $250,000 to about $1.4 million. The average salary improves from $105,000 to $600,000, while the minimum salary will exceed $300,000, up from $66,000.Dawn Staley, a WNBA pioneer and current head women’s coach at South Carolina, told her players they “really don’t understand what’s happening, but what’s happening is incredibly historic. When you enter the league, you’re going to make probably 100 times, 75 times more than someone that (played) 30 years ago, 10 years ago, five years ago.”Star Power Meets Market ValueAs with any sport, the biggest stars should make the most money. In order to achieve that, the new CBA includes a provision called EPIC or Exceptional Performance on Initial Contract. It gives players who achieve certain milestones the ability to renegotiate their deals before their fourth season.A player named to the all-WNBA first or second team in one of her first three seasons is now eligible for a max extension before their fourth season. A player who is voted the Most Valuable Player award in one of her first three seasons is eligible for a supermax extension.Ms. Clark, who was All-WNBA first team as a rookie in 2024, will play 2026 under her rookie deal that jumps from $85,873 to $530,000. She will be eligible for the max extension of $1.3 million in 2027 and a supermax deal of $1.7 million in 2028.Ms. Reese, meanwhile, moves from $74,909 to about $350,000 this year and $395,000 in 2027, though she could also be eligible for a max contract if she earns All-WNBA honors. Ms. Bueckers earned $78,831 during last year’s rookie season. She’ll make nearly $500,000 this year and could be eligible for a max contract in 2028.Ms. Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces is among more than 80 players slated to hit free agency and benefit from the new CBA. A four-time MVP, Ms. Wilson will command a supermax deal up from $200,000. She’ll make more in 2026 than the $1.03 million she has earned combined from contracts over the course of her eight-season career.Others set to hit the free agent market include Sabrina Ionescu, Jackie Young, Kelsey Plum, Nneka Ogwumike, Kahleah Copper and Misses. Collier and Stewart.For the first time free agents enter a market with financial flexibility and ability to make strategic choices based on options beyond salaries.Perfect TimingFew players embody the shifting landscape than Olivia Miles.She raised eyebrows last year by electing to bypass the 2025 WNBA Draft and use her fifth year of college eligibility to enter the NCAA Transfer portal and ultimately sign with Texas Christian University. A projected lottery pick, Ms. Miles elected to stay in college while the WNBA worked out a new CBA that might lead to a richer rookie contract in 2026.The gamble paid off. Not only did the WNBA work out a new CBA, but Ms. Miles had a career year at TCU, elevating her draft stock. “I can’t blame the critics,” she said. “What I left on the table seemed stupid. But I knew deep in my heart that I needed one more year to be ready. This year has paid off for me in ways that I can’t even describe.”Instead of the $66,000 she would have earned this year had she joined WNBA, she’ll make nearly $300,000 next year. “It’s just a win for women and it’s a precedent set,” Ms. Miles said. “Moving forward it’ll only get better.”With financial gain tied directly to the league’s continued growth, Ms. Johnson, while still in college, already feels the responsibility of making the league even more popular. “I just hope that it gets better and better for the younger girls that’s coming after me,” she said. “That’s what it’s all about. I hope that I can come, make an impact so that I can turn it up some more and so it can just keep growing.”Her words echo a broader understanding within the player community that while historic, the new CBA is not an endpoint.A Busy Month AheadOnce formally approved by the WNBA Board of Governors, the new CBA will trigger a flurry of activity, including the expansion draft, free agency and the collegiate draft. Franchises will recalibrate strategies; agents will reassess valuations, and players will, for the first time, navigate a system that offers both financial security and upward mobility.For decades, WNBA players have operated in a system that undervalued their contributions even as they elevated the sport’s profile through performance, advocacy and cultural impact. They built the league’s foundation without fully sharing in its rewards. While it doesn’t place the WNBA on equal footing with their male counterparts or solve every structural disparity within the sport, the new CBA reinforces the principle that the value players create should be reflected in what they earn.
