Pregnant Lexi Thompson Embraces Indoor League as a New Stage for Women’s Golf

Eleven-time Ladies PGA winner Lexi Thompson will begin the Women’s Team Golf League season awaiting a new role in her life and a new kind of challenge in her sport.Ms. Thompson, 31, is expecting her first child with her husband, Max Provost, in February. She also plans to compete for Detroit’s Motor City Golf Club when the Women’s Team Golf League makes its debut on November 8. The inaugural season of the simulator golf league runs through December 23, with playoffs beginning during Christmas week.Ms. Thompson married Mr. Provost in March at La Casa Toscana, a private estate in southwest Florida. In August, she announced that they were expecting their first child, due in February. By the time the WTGL playoffs conclude, she will be approaching the final weeks before becoming a mother.Ms. Thompson does not know how her body — or her golf swing — will respond as the season progresses. But she said that the pregnancy will not change her commitment to a league she describes as an opportunity to expand the audience for women’s golf.“I agreed to play on WTGL before I found out I was pregnant,” Ms. Thompson told reporters at a recent media gathering. “But it wouldn’t have changed my mind, honestly, unless it was right at the due date.”Team Golf for WomenFor Ms. Thompson, the decision was straightforward. The new league offers a chance to compete alongside teammates in a format that differs from the individual rhythm of the LPGA Tour. “It was a no-brainer to be able to be part of WTGL and to be able to represent my team, and be partners with my teammates here,” she said. “It’s just a chance to be able to grow the women’s game.”The season’s timing gives Ms. Thompson a rare public test of how an elite athlete manages competition during pregnancy. She framed her participation less as a personal experiment than as a chance to help establish a new platform for women’s golf.“If I play all the matches, or if I just play one just to be able to grow the game, that’s what it’s all about,” she said.Ms. Thompson will make her league debut November 10, when Motor City Golf Club — one of five founding WTGL teams — faces Los Angeles. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s Expanding PartnershipWomen’s Tomorrow Golf League is the latest venture for TMRW Sports, the company founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, in partnership with the LPGA. The league takes the basic concept of the men’s indoor team competition, TGL, and applies it to women’s professional golf. The inaugural season opens November 8 at 3 p.m. with Los Angeles Golf Club against New York Golf Club. The match will be televised by ESPN. The season includes 10 regular-season matchups followed by four days of playoffs, with matches airing on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, or ION.All competitions will take place at SoFi Center at a purpose-built venue on the Palm Beach State College campus at Palm Beach Gardens. The indoor setting is a sharp departure from the traditional golf course, where players move across acres of land and a round can take much of a day.At SoFi Center, players hit full shots into a 64-by-53-foot simulator screen before moving to a short-game area known as the GreenZone. The 22,475-square-foot GreenZone features a large rotating turntable and actuators that can change the contours of the putting surface. Matches are designed to last about two hours, with teams competing in a head-to-head format. The aim is to combine golf’s technical demands with the pace and atmosphere of an arena sport. Players remain together in the same space, giving viewers more opportunities to see teammates interact, strategize, and react to one another.Traditional professional golf often asks fans to follow players over four rounds, with long stretches between the most consequential shots. WTGL condenses the competition and puts the players’ personalities closer to the center of the presentation.Michelle Wie West ReturnsMichelle Wie West, an investor in Los Angeles Golf Club and one of the league’s most prominent players, believes the setting could make golf more approachable to people who do not follow a conventional tournament. “It could bring in a new audience that maybe doesn’t want to go out and walk 18 holes of a golf tournament, but want the arena experience,” Ms. Wie West said. “Hopefully, this will be a gateway to getting more fans interested in the LPGA Tour.”Ms. Wie West, 37, will be part of opening night, returning to competitive golf after stepping away from the professional game in 2023. Her career included five LPGA Tour victories, including the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst No. 2. She has said the opportunity to compete in WTGL, alongside teammates and in a new format, helped draw her back.Bold Schedule Clashes With the NFLThe schedule is designed to keep the league moving quickly, but it also presents challenges. Seven matches will compete directly with NFL games, including the regular season’s only doubleheader on November 29 and two playoff matches. Five of those clashes are scheduled for Sundays and two for Mondays. The playoffs also unfold during Christmas week. The semifinals and best-of-three final are scheduled to begin on December 20 and conclude December 23, a period when viewers’ attention may be divided by holiday travel and other sports. The league is nevertheless betting that the indoor format, team identities, and recognizable players can create a distinct place in the sports calendar. The men’s TGL tourney provides an early indication of the potential audience. Its second season reached 21.8 million unique viewers, an eight percent increase from the first season. The playoffs averaged 618,000 viewers, up 42 percent, while the two-match final averaged 724,000 viewers, up 50 percent. The second final match averaged 989,000 viewers and peaked at 1.15 million, according to figures cited by TMRW Sports. The company has said its audience includes viewers who do not regularly watch traditional golf.Mr. Hack said TGL’s data suggests that 30 percent of its viewers do not watch other forms of golf. He said that proportion could be higher for WTGL because the league will showcase women players in a new environment. The question is whether that audience will translate into sustained interest in the LPGA Tour and women’s golf beyond the arena. WTGL’s organizers describe the league as a complement to the tour, not a replacement for it: a shorter, team-based product that can give fans a closer connection to athletes and encourage them to follow the sport elsewhere.LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler has said the partnership reflects a belief that innovation can help the game reach new fans and create greater visibility for its players. TMRW Sports’ co-founder and chief executive, Mike McCarley, has described WTGL as another step toward a modern, media-focused version of a centuries-old game.WTGL’s Powerful Owners, Global StarsSome of the most powerful owners and ownership groups in sports are backing the WTGL. The Fenway Sports Group acquired Boston Common Golf. The team will represent Boston and New England, extending a brand established in 2023.The other WTGL teams are also owned by powerhouses. Atlanta Drive Golf Club is owned by Arthur M. Blank and AMB Sports and Entertainment; the Los Angeles Golf Club’s proprietor is Alexis Ohanian; Steve Cohen and Cohen Private Ventures own New York Golf Club; and Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp and Kevin Kelleher are owners of Motor City Golf Club. Each ownership group also owns a team in TGL, bringing established sports and business experience to WTGL.The WTGL rosters include five players on each of the five founding teams: Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf and Motor City Golf Club. The teams feature 25 players from 13 countries, combining major champions, Olympic medalists, and rising stars. The rosters include nine players who have won 15 major championships, 12 players with a combined 48 Solheim Cup selections, and 14 Olympians who have made 28 Olympic appearances.Three players from each five-player roster will compete in every match. The teams will play a round-robin regular season before single-elimination semifinals and a best-of-three finals series.Ms. Thompson’s Motor City Golf Club’s lineup spans North America, Europe, and Asia. Canada’s Brooke Henderson has 14 LPGA Tour victories, including two majors, while Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul, the 2025 world No. 1 and Rolex Player of the Year, has 10 wins. China’s Ruoning “Ronni” Yin won the 2023 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and Swiss player Albane Valenzuela adds Olympic and Stanford experience.Atlanta’s roster includes three-time LPGA winner Charley Hull; Minjee Lee, who has 11 victories and three majors; and two-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso. Andrea Lee and Nataliya Guseva round out the team.Boston blends proven winners and emerging talent. Céline Boutier won the 2023 Amundi Evian Championship, Megan Khang has played in four Solheim Cups, and Lottie Woad owns two LPGA titles. Chizzy Iwai, and Ina Yoon complete the roster. In addition to Ms. Wie West, Los Angeles features Aki Iwai, Gaby López, Alison Lee, and Kiara Romero. The Boston and Los Angeles Iwais made history as the first twins to win on the LPGA Tour.New York’s team includes 23-time winner Lydia Ko, Danielle Kang, Linn Grant, Rose Zhang, and 19-year-old Yana Wilson, who captured her first LPGA title in 2026.Every regular-season match carries postseason implications, setting up a race for a place in the playoffs.
