Scarcity by Design: Masters Ticket Frenzy Once Linked to Suicide Grows Even Tighter

The toughest ticket in sports is getting even tougher to obtain.As the 2026 Masters Tournament approaches its opening round Thursday, the already scarce supply of tickets available on the secondary market has tightened further, the result of stricter enforcement, evolving hospitality models and a philosophy of exclusivity that has long defined Augusta National Golf Club.For decades, access to the Masters has been less about price than availability. Obtaining tickets on the secondary market will be even more difficult this year, continuing a pattern that began when the demand to attend the annual spectacle at Augusta National led to criminal activity and personal tragedies, including a suicide.Blame Tiger Woods.Tickets to the Masters have always been a hot commodity but have been in overdrive since 1997 when Mr. Woods won his first of five Green Jackets. The combination of Mr. Woods making his pro debut in the Masters and a huge number of tickets purchased by Nike, led to a dearth of available tickets normally given to local brokers like Allen Caldwell. The native of nearby Martinez, Georgia, couldn’t come up with the 300 tickets he promised to corporations as part of a hospitality package worth up to $25,000 each.Two hours before the first tee-time in 1997, his wife found Mr. Caldwell dead on their back porch from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, a tragedy that underscored the intense pressure and financial stakes tied to Masters access.Twenty years later, the lengths some would go to secure Masters tickets surfaced again in a federal fraud case out of Texas. Michael Freeman and members of his family admitted to operating a scheme by manipulating the Masters lottery system to obtain tickets and resell them for profit. The Freemans set up fake accounts with fake identities. Tickets won on the fake accounts were then resold for thousands of dollars.The family ran the scheme for about five years before Augusta National alerted the FBI. Mr. Freeman was sentenced to 28 months in prison, and the family was ordered to pay $275,000 in restitution.Unlike the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship and the Open Championship, which partner with external ticketing platforms, Augusta National has always distributed its own tickets from single day tickets for practice rounds to weeklong badges.Most tickets are distributed through a lottery system where millions apply and only a fraction are selected. Other badges acquired by patrons—never call them fans—are sometimes passed down within families though the club scans local obituaries to cancel the tickets of badge holders who have died. Attendance is capped at roughly 40,000 people each day. The result is a fixed inventory facing ever-growing demand.That demand has only intensified in the modern era with players like Mr. Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler assuming the mantle from Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson.But the growing popularity of the tournament has heightened concerns over tickets purchased in secondary markets.Augusta National bans cell phones on the golf course and doesn’t accept digital tickets. All tickets, even for practice, are physical badges that must be displayed at all times, and there are strict rules against reselling.“The resale of any Masters Ticket is strictly prohibited,” according to the Masters website. “Holders of tickets acquired from third parties, by whatever means, may be excluded from attendance to the tournament.”Despite the policy being in place for a number of years it was only lightly enforced allowing scalpers at nearby parking lots and restaurants to resell daily tickets. Fans leaving the course for the day often resold their tickets to those looking to spend an hour or two on the property.But last year, the enforcement became more aggressive after four-day badges that normally cost $450 were resold for $2,750 and $140 tickets for the final round were being sold for up to $8,000.Hundreds of ticket holders were pulled aside and questioned about where they bought their tickets and whether they had a direct connection to their original badge holder. Many, reportedly, had their tickets, scanned with no problems on Thursday or Friday, but saw them cancelled for the weekend.Hospitality executives described the crackdown as a “bloodbath.”As a result, SeatGeek is not reselling Masters tickets this year due to the tightening restrictions, while StubHub has extremely low availability, showing “only 1% of tickets left.” A paper ticket to Sunday’s final round lists for $9,575.Meanwhile, the Masters increased its regular ticket prices. Passes for Thursday through Sunday are $160 each, up from $140 last year. Practice round tickets have increased from $100 to $125 from Monday and Tuesday and $150 for Wednesday when the par-3 contest is held.Part of the shift is tied to Augusta National’s evolving approach to hospitality. Sources suggest obtaining the toughest ticket in sports is getting tougher in preparation for expanding its Map & Flag hospitality experience and budding partnership with On Location, a live event company that also operates ticketing for the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, Olympics and many other major sporting events.Built as a complement to Berckmans Place, Augusta National’s ultra-exclusive on-course hospitality space, the Map & Flag experience opened in 2024 across the street from Augusta National. It has proven to be an instant success with corporate clients despite its high price tag. Roughly 2,500 Map & Flag passes sold this year for around $17,000 each.“The popularity of this venue inspires us to consider what else may be possible in future years,” Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said recently.The bottom line is obtaining a ticket to the Masters is hard not only because the event is popular, but it’s hard by design. Through loyalty, scarcity and tradition, Augusta National has made obtaining a ticket less a purchase and more of a privilege defined by exclusivity.
