Sports Leagues Turn to Influencers To Capture Next Generation of Fans

Two days before the start of the Cadillac Classic, Grant Horvat walked the grounds of Trump National Doral flanked by a small army of cameras documenting his every interaction.Mr. Horvat, a professional golfer of some merit, was not in South Florida to compete in the PGA Tour’s $20 million Signature event. Instead, he was there in his increasingly valuable role as one of golf’s most influential digital creators.Partnering with TaylorMade, Mr. Horvat filmed a behind-the-scenes video, giving his followers and viewers a look at how some of the world’s top players prepare for a marquee tournament.He analyzed the putting stroke of the world’s No.1 player Scottie Scheffler, chatted on the driving range with Tommy Fleetwood and Collin Morikawa to learn what strategies they would employ in attacking Doral’s Blue Monster. He also visited the TaylorMade equipment truck.“We’re going to pick apart these guys’s brains and see what they go through when they’re getting ready for a PGA Tournament,” Mr. Horvat says during the 48-minute video.For decades, this kind of access would have been reserved for network television crews or documentary filmmakers associated with the PGA Tour. Today, it increasingly includes creators with loyal digital audiences.Mr. Horvat, 27, is a former Division II collegiate golfer who has played in several minor league golf tour events and briefly competed on the Korn Ferry Tour. But his greatest success has come not from scorecards, but from digital followers.With 1.6 million subscribers across social platforms, Mr. Horvat has become one of golf’s most recognizable personalities, part of a rapidly expanding class of sports creators who capture the attention of audiences that discover sports through short-form video clips, livestreams, podcasts, and behind-the-scenes access.His TaylorMade video generated more than 200,000 views and more than 200 comments within two days. A snippet of the content shows him chatting nonstop to the cameras as he watches Mr. Fleetwood hit balls on the range before walking up to the world’s seventh-ranked player to have a chat. “Tell me if you think anything is going on,” Mr. Fleetwood says, inviting Mr. Horvat’s analysis of his swing.The response to the video is a continuing sign of how creators can impact professional sports. Leagues such as the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, and the NHL are embracing creators who can deliver sports content in shorter, more personality-driven formats across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other streaming platforms.The NBA partnered with more than 200 influencers during All-Star weekend, while the NFL invited influencers to chronicle activities surrounding the Super Bowl. Creators had a front-row seat to Major League Baseball’s recent Home Run Derby, allowing them access to batting practice, dugouts, and player interviews, while Formula 1 gives vloggers paddock access to follow the celebrities in attendance. The Kentucky Derby and the Masters, two traditional-laden spectacles, have also embraced influencers.The shift represents more than a marketing experience. It’s part of a long-term strategy as professional sports come to the realization that attracting fans through digital introduction can lead to future ticket sales.“This is the future,” IShowSpeed, also known as Darren Jason Watkins Jr., told the New York Times. IShowSpeed has 51 million YouTube subscribers and partnered with the platform on its NFL game in Brazil. “It gets to a point to stick to the old traditional ways. You’ve got to move with the new internet ways.”Not only are influencers being allowed to chronicle major sporting events, they’ve become part of the attraction as their fame and celebrity can rival professional athletes.As a prelude to the NBA Cup Championship in Las Vegas last December, an NBA Creator Cup was held, involving 26 content creators. “These guys allow us to have an authentic voice,” the NBA’s senior vice president of social and digital content, Bob Carney, told lvsportsbiz.com. “We need to be where our fans are.”The NFL, which features burly men playing a collision game in helmets and shoulder pads, also found a way to incorporate creators. A flag football game before the Super Bowl featured two teams of content creators with a combined 100 million YouTube subscribers, playing alongside artists and NFL legends.“This annual flag game has quickly become one of the Super Bowl week’s most anticipated fan events, bringing together sports, entertainment, and culture in a way that is truly authentic,” the NFL’s senior vice president of social, influencer and content marketing, Ian Trombetta, told Variety. “Partnering with YouTube, we’re highlighting the rapid global growth of flag football, while creating an experience that brings fans around the world closer to the sport as well the creators and stars they love.”Mr. Horvat has been invited to compete in multiple PGA Tournaments but has declined all of them due to the tour not allowing him to film the event because of media rights restrictions. He recently played in the American Express Pro-Am where he was paired with Adam Scott and Matt Fitzpatrick, while continuing to build a business empire rooted less in competition and more in access.His latest venture includes partnering with the Bryan Bros on a creator-led competition featuring 16 YouTube golfers playing four events. The finale will be a $1 million individual stroke play championship at Wynn Resort in Las Vegas. Last year’s Internet Invitational, a six-episode series with 48 creators and tour players, attracted more than 25 million views.Professional golfers such as Bryson DeChambeau have entered the YouTube space, but the everyman aspect of the content creator is built on loyalty and consistency. “You don’t have to be a tour player to have to make an impact and show how fun golf is,” George Bryan of the Bryan Bros. told WPXI Pittsburgh.As younger audiences grow less attached to traditional broadcasts and are more loyal to creators, leagues have accepted the new reality: sports leagues are not only battling each other on the playing field, but in the digital space as well.
