Trump and Mamdani To Parley at Gracie Mansion Ahead of UN General Assembly Meeting

President Trump will be visiting Mayor Zohran Mamdani at New York City’s mayoral mansion Monday for a parley scheduled on Yom Kippur and ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting. It is the third such meeting between the two political opponents who seemingly get along swimmingly.Mr. Mamdani’s press office confirmed to The New York Sun that the pair will meet at Gracie Mansion to “focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.” Other details were not provided. It is the third meeting between the city and the nation’s highest executives. The first was at the White House in November 2025, after Mr. Mamdani was elected but before he took office. A second meeting was held at the White House in February 2026. The frenemies have previously tussled over taxes on New York City’s wealthiest and immigration and share aThe meeting comes as the world’s leaders, including Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, descend on New York City ahead of the annual summit that will be the last one hosted by Secretary-General António Guterres, whose decade-long tenure has been marked by an elevated backlash against the Jewish state. Mr. Netanyahu, who will be dropping into the weeklong events for a single day, has previously been declared persona non grata by the mayor, who stated he would arrest the prime minister if he had his druthers, though he holds no such authority to do so. Mr. Mamdani has previously credited Mr. Guterres with “steady, principled leadership.” While the 15-member Security Council, which is responsible for identifying Mr. Guterres’ replacement has failed to lock in on an agreeable candidate, White House officials have reportedly stated that the United States is looking for a leader who will get back to basics, rein in task forces that exceed its mission, respect national sovereignty, and get its finances in order. Among the frontrunners could be the first female secretary-general, though Chile’s former president, Michelle Bachelet, ended her campaign over the weekend after being trounced in a Security Council straw poll.As the United States seeks to impact the decision for the U.N.’s next leader, it is also managing attendance at the summit. Expected to arrive in New York City is Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, who was traveling to Qatar for a meeting before heading to New York. Not expected is the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, whom the State Department denied a visa for the second year in a row. The United Nations will hear from him via a remote video address. China’s president, Xi Jinping, also will not attend the international powwow and is instead scheduled to meet with Mr. Trump at Washington.Over the weekend, the mayor issued a video statement welcoming dignitaries to the 80-year-old international body that had pledged to create a just and lasting peace after World War II, but has so far failed to rein in the same bigotry that instigated the war to end all wars. On Friday, Mr. Mamdani held a press conference with city and federal law enforcement officials about security ahead of the meeting of international officials. The mayor said the security posture will be elevated as a matter of course “even though there are no known specific or credible threats against the United Nations General Assembly or our city at this time.”Mr. Mamdani noted that streets “will inevitably be impacted,” as he noted pedestrian and traffic closures throughout the workweek while diplomats shuttle around the United Nations compound. The U.S. Secret Service has said all drones will be banned.
