Why I Fear for the Future of My Once-Beautiful, Now Broken Country

Sadly I’ve been reading for some time that Jews were leaving Great Britain in numbers unheard of since 1290 and the Edict of Expulsion. That’s when King Edward gave Britain the shameful title of first European country ever to expel its entire Jewish population — some 3,000 souls.Though I hated the fact, it was still just numbers on a page. The Jewish Chronicle was reporting in December that the “number of British Jews making aliyah has grown by 16 per cent after a rise in antisemitism in the United Kingdom and also drawn by the economic benefits of moving to Israel.”The Times of Israel was earlier reporting that “only one-third of British Jews believe that Jews have a long-term future in the United Kingdom, and half have considered leaving Britain in the past two years due to antisemitism,” citing a survey by the Campaign Against Antisemitism. The survey’s results, the Times of Israel added, “reflect the sharp rise in antisemitism in the U.K. since October 7, 2023.” Since then, the Times reported, “nearly 2,000 antisemitic incidents were documented in the first half of 2024, the highest-ever tally for a six-month period.” The Times of Israel reported that the survey by the Campaign Against Antisemitism also “found that a majority of British Jews,” some 58 percent, “hide their Judaism due to antisemitism, and less than half,” some 43 percent, “feel welcome in the UK.”The survey found that “Some 84 percent of British Jews believe that the authorities are not doing enough to address and punish antisemitism,” the Times reported, while some “62 percent are not confident that police would prosecute an antisemitic crime if they reported it.” Of the survey respondents, the Times concluded, “three-quarters said they are dissatisfied with how their local police forces have been policing anti-Israel marches in their cities.”This is particularly evident in London, where most British Jews live. But it’s even affecting my seaside home. At a Hanukkah party last year, one of them I actually know — a mover and shaker in Brighton’s small but strong Jewish community — told me she was leaving soon.She was excited by the prospect; “I can prepare the way for others, because I know a lot of us want to leave.” I will miss my Jewish neighbours. I’ve stood on picket lines to keep Israeli shops open with them, been to hostage vigils and most recently to menorah lightings.For 30 years I’ve waited affectionately and impatiently while they insisted on singing the national anthem before getting to what I’ve always thought of as the Good Bit — Ha’tikvah. Their loyalty to the British crown both touched and, as a republican, baffled me. Yet that loyalty has got them nowhere.There is a pro-Arabist monarch on the throne, and ever since October 7, there are angry mobs of Muslims on the streets at weekends, openly calling for the murder of “Zionists,” which means Jews. The fealty of the police to the Palestinian protestors was summed up by the incident in 2024 when Gideon Falter, the chief executive of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, was prevented from crossing the road near such a march in London. A police officer who stopped him told him that because he was wearing a yarmulke that he was “quite openly Jewish,” expressing concern that his presence would “antagonise” the crowd. The officer threatened him with arrest if he did not leave the area.The recent resignation of the police chief who literally used AI to create a “threat” from Maccabi Tel Aviv fans in order to ban them as the mainly Muslim neighbourhood wanted was another disgraceful example of British pro-Muslim/anti-Jewish policing — as is the mystery of “the activist” who slashed the portrait of Lord Balfour nearly a year ago now.The BBC are in on the war against the Jews, too, happily broadcasting the *punk* band Bob Vylan (fronted by the by the most un-punk-named singer ever, one Pascal Robinson-Foster) pandering to a bunch of gap-yah in-breds at Glastonbury, who cheer happily at the call for the murder of uppity Jews determined to defend themselves — “Death, death to the IDF,” always popular with the English ruling classes and now their offspring too. The police investigation was, of course, quietly dropped at the end of last year.The police and politicians were also complicit in allowing marchers to scream “GLOBALISE THE INTIFADA!” at the weekly hate marches — and then acted shocked when Islamists attacked a Manchester synagogue, as their equivalents did in Australia after the Bondi pogrom.A good deal of the fighting-age men (barely any women and children, unlike our Ukrainian refugees) who come in on the boats every day are Muslims. We have no idea how many of them are “sleepers.” They are far more likely per capita to be sex offenders than Britons of other faiths. See the Pakistani rape gangs.Yet the Establishment — police, politicians, state-sponsored broadcaster the BBC — persist in favoring our large, angry, disproportionally dis-loyal Muslim intake over our tiny, law-abiding loyal Jewish one. And there’s the rub; there are around 4 million Muslims in Great Britain, an increase from 2.7 million in 2011, and only around 300,000 British Jews.You do “the math,” as your people say; the running-scared Labour politicians certainly are. An ineffably sad comment beneath a recent piece I wrote about the decline of London in the Spectator said it all:“I moved to London after university in 1994. Worked hard; got married; raised a family…then, relatively recently, London realised we’re Jews. You don’t have to be observant Jews (we’re certainly not). You just have to be Jews. That’s enough for it to be OK to be treated like dirt.”The commenter added: “We still have our property there, but spend much more of our time in the countryside. I work overseas and have to be in town perhaps once a month. There are areas of the city I simply don’t venture into. We were welcomed with open arms in the countryside and made friends quickly.”The commenter concluded that “once I retire (hopefully early, in perhaps 10 years) we’ll sell up in Londonistan, see the children right and buy overseas. My wife wants to go to Jerusalem. London is no longer for people like us, I’m afraid.”I can’t go to Israel; I am old and disabled and 100 percent Gentile. Yet though I hate the fact that my Jewish friends and neighbors are packing up and leaving, I envy them their beautiful country. It’s partly selfish, too; without our Jewish population, I genuinely fear for the future of my once-beautiful, now broken country.
